On the first day of the ride while Joe made an extended stop for heat management (the afternoon desert heat is no joke, y’all), Matt and Leslie had already driven ahead to Ludlow, CA, to a travel stop with a Dairy Queen to wait for him to roll by.

As they walked in, they saw a bicycle out front with saddle bags of gear and an American flag standing on top. Then inside, they saw who they believed to be the owner.

They struck up a conversation and sure enough, he had just cycled from Florida to California and was making his way back towards the Grand Canyon with a friend running support. He rides for Veterans and while his ride looked quite a bit different from Joe’s, there were similar tales of endurance.

It was our first of many reminders that the Mother Road has a way of connecting strangers who are doing hard things and moving in the same direction.

The magic of Route 66 for us was all about the people we met along the way.

(Thank you to @thenameless.nomad & @roll4nature for keeping us company and for all the support for Joe!)

Today we explored a new trail at Lake Hogan in California. It was a nice change from the trails we’re used to riding, with breathtaking lake views, peaceful surroundings, and fun, flowy singletrack.

We logged 22 miles of pure enjoyment while staying on track with our training program. Every new trail brings a new adventure and another opportunity to build fitness.
