It was inspirational to visit this ancient cultural hub and engage with years of heritage via ‘Alleyways of AlUla’. I participated in the project via SCT by creating these visuals.

Saudi Now is a British Council resource serving as a hub for UK-Saudi cultural collaboration, with this project being developed in partnership with the Royal Commission for AlUla.

We’re grateful to share this reflection from the British Council following our AlUla grant-supported project 🤍

Seeing Mohammed recently photographed with HRH Prince William during the UK visit makes this moment even more special. Strong local voices are at the heart of Alleyways of AlUla, and this is just the beginning as we move towards Tantora.

In December I was very lucky to be invited to Al Ula, where I met artists, toured untouched heritage sites and took part in a very special project with @sustain_conserve_trust , made possible by the ‘Saudi Now’ partnership grant from the @britishcouncilksa and the Royal Commission for Al Ula. Thank you to @denizbeckpartners for letting me tag along, what an experience! 🌴 taken in Al ula طنطورة by @romablay

Some experimentation since my life feels like a random experiment currently. Whilst working on a different project, I created these stop motion pieces. Connecting with the landscape here in Bahrain, I sourced this clay locally from Riffa. Shapes inspired by everything around me, since everything here is shaped a little bit differently. taken in Manama, Bahrain by @romablay

Illustrating my first book. Meeting Clarke set me on a path to create something groundbreaking. For Clarke, the idea of a ‘blind book’ - a colourless, Filofax bound acetate book - could never capture his identity. “I see through a thousand dots” - so as a team, we evolved the formula of a braille storybook. It would work harmoniously with illustration and Latin/braille alphabets. We created an adventure that showcases the world of braille to visually impaired and sighted kids alike - AND their families. The first of its kind! (And the first of many). by @romablay

Free Workshop Alert! 🔧🖨️✨'Drawn From Dust' - Creating flipbook animations from Blender particles🔧🖨️✨ (JULY 19th)

Join @romablay and learn a thing or two about the world of 3D animation before creating a fun flipbook to take home! This is a beginner friendly exploration of Blender, the free tool that dominates the landscape of modern 3D animation and design.

We’ll break down the software into something beautiful - you can make some fun custom shapes and animate them before mixing things up into a printed flipbook.

After your creations are printed, we encourage your creative side to really shine by adding colour to your frames in the real world, a marriage of old and new styles of animation!

Connect and colour with others, then take home a piece of this workshop you can be proud of, you’re officially an animator.

I was proud to present my first ever ‘gallery’ style piece ‘Crosscurrents’ at SCT Creative House’s open event last weekend.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who came to support me and witness a little piece of my story. It was great to connect and learn together. I’ve written up a summary below of what the piece means to me in case you weren’t able to come and hear me waffle on about it.

I am always trying to come up with ways to best present what I do beyond a screen, I think that’s probably why I was so drawn to illustrating a children’s book (more on that later). I’m an animator but that needs to extend into the physical realm sometimes.

This piece is very personal to me. I worked hard and taught myself a few things along the way, some technical skills and some history lessons. I love history, I love art and to educate. I will always be curious and hungry, this is who I am. Everything clicked right into place when I began merging the lateen sails of my future home in Bahrain with the bold ships that I have come to know after almost nine years of living by the sea in Portsmouth, the city that adopted me.

The dhows and naval ships meet on shared waters, they move at the same pace and are framed by a horizon that blends elements of both landscapes. The piece leverages augmented reality animation to invite viewers to reflect on the enduring spirit of exploration. Do you see naval cannons or Bahraini pearls encircling my boats? The context of your life could inform your answer.

Ultimately, a move abroad to a region like this has not been without turmoil. Just this week I had to take a mental health break from endless headlines of red-faced political leaders pressing launch buttons without thought towards the real cost of human lives, but what’s new? Just like the old naval ships show, warfare and conflict has landed on every shore of every country, ever. Do we carry on regardless? Or should we hope for better? Either way, for me at least, everything good in my life so far has come from being at least a little bit brave. taken in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard by @romablay
