HAPPY TEARS FLOWING 🥹🥹🥹

Important Info: Our Birthday is September 17, 1917.

McDonogh 35 High School has called FIVE DIFFERENT AERIES home. One hand-me-down, two temporaries, and two state-of-the-art fortresses. From the beginning, we were fated (no, SLATED) to fail -- after all, Black Teens and Higher Education weren't "for us". All we were expected to be were Laborers and Servants of the Mainstream of New Orleans Society. That was the "Way" of the Times.

Yet for the Vision of a Community -- and the Crusading Unity of an Activist Army -- Higher Education for Black Teens would have stayed a WISH... ...until it became a WAY. The 1st Way was the opening of McDonogh 35 High School, New Orleans' 1st Public High School opened by the Orleans Parish School System that was dedicated to educating post-8th Grade Black Students. Also, it was the School System's 1st Public COEDUCATIONAL High School (regardless of the racial or cultural identity of the students). It was RADICAL...REVOLUTIONARY...REBELLIOUS... ...and Mainstream New Orleans dis its "level best" to "make it go away" (and they were VERY CREATIVE and RELENTLESS about it).

Fortunately -- McDonogh 35 was built for 12+ Rounds of Battles...and WOW, have we been Battle-Tested.

This past week, we've our 109 Birthday 🎂. We've had three parties, a football game, a scholarship brunch -- and we've had EACH OTHER through all times good, bad, and "meh". It's called LEGACY WEEK, and I view it as a "precursor" to Homecoming. Legacy Week is our time to learn...to teach...to unite..to celebrate the Work and Sacrifices of our Early Ancestors in getting our school opened and sustained through some "stuff" 🙄😡🙄😡. Sure, I wish we didn't have to be at "Opposite of Peace" so much ... ... but when we come home to our McDonogh 35 Aerie, we make those times special.

Next year, September 17th falls on a FRIDAY -- and we'll 110 years old. I hope we have a HUUUUUGE PARTY!!

More than just a Wreath-Laying Ceremony...it was a Homecoming to a Campus that MATURED us into Greatness!!

When the first classes stepped into that building, they became the first wave of Alumni to be housed in a campus specifically designed for High-School Students. Not a hand-me-down, not a temporary site......A REAL HIGH-SCHOOL HOME!! We GREW UP in that Aerie via Selective Admissions and Teachers who didn't play about our Success (even when we acted like we didn't want to be successful). Heck, some of our Teachers were Alumni from the campuses of South Rampart, Camp, and St. Ann Streets. They succeeded in buildings unfit or not optimized for High-School Students.

By comparison, Kerlerec was a CASTLE -- modern amenities, green space, and located in a Historically Black Neighborhood!! Yeah, we were dragged because our Aerie was built different--but we were built different, so it was cool. It was something our Ancestors DREAMED of having -- and we honored those dreams by being the BEST and the BRIGHTEST.

The Bricks featured in these photos come from our 1331 Aerie. They've weathered storms, survived demolition, and received a final opportunity to come home after 43 Years of Service to the Roneagle Legacy. They will be donated to the Archives at the Roneagle Way campus, joining a Brick from the South Rampart Street campus that survived 1965's Hurricane Betsy. I'm proud to share them with our Roneagle Family... ...I just wish they could TALK and give me some GOOD 4-1-1 about being a part of our Legacy (and maybe some spicy narratives, LOL).

Legacies are carried in more ways than just Vocals and Documents. Sometimes they're embedded in the Physical Places we call Home.
