When asked at 4 years old what he wanted to be when he grew up, my nephew Justin Herbert replied, “ a man.” Sometimes that’s enough. Justin has always loved automobiles and pretty much anything with a motor. He has been working as a diesel mechanic for a while now. In his spare time he works on the automobiles of other’s on the side. When I have an automotive question he’s oftentimes the first person I call. The 60s Pontiac wagon and motor are among the many things we saw at Charlotte Motor Speedway on a family trip and outing back in 2012.🔥🔥🔥

She Called Us All Baby Doll
For years — YEARS — I have been trying to remember the name of a woman who was a custodian at McDonogh 35 when I was coming up. She was the loveliest person. Called every single one of us “baby doll” as we passed her in the hallways.
This morning, watching Royce Osborne’s documentary All on a Mardi Gras Day on PBS, there she was. On screen. And her name came flooding back:
Miss Miriam Reed.
Miss Reed. That was her name.
What I didn’t know as a young person walking those halls is that I was in the presence of a living, moving, breathing archive of Mardi Gras history. Miss Reed was one of the original Baby Dolls — that legendary group of Black women who would dress in character and take to the streets on Mardi Gras Day. She knew ALL of the history. She was likely only a generation or so behind the very first women who founded the tradition.
And there she was, every day, sweeping our hallways and calling us “baby doll.” We had no idea.
This is what it means to grow up between Mississippi and New Orleans — you are surrounded by history, even when you don’t yet know it. I’m so grateful for Miss Reed, for Chief Tootie Montana of the Yellow Pocahontas who also appears in this film, and for all the elders and culture bearers — Kalamu ya Salaam, Charles Siler, and so many others — who I’ve had the great honor to learn from.
What a thing to wake up and be reminded. 🙏🏾

When I was running for office for the first time in 2020, the incomparable @romainwanda pulled me to the side at a picnic, brought me over to the field behind @mcdonogh35, and told me I needed to build a football field there.

It took almost five years (including two renegotiating a cooperative endeavor agreement), but on Wednesday we celebrated the groundbreaking of a tremendous partnership that will benefit kids and neighbors alike. The new Willie Hall Playground at #35 will bring:

-Giant underground cisterns that will hold stormwater runoff in a neighborhood that has always been prone to street flooding
-On top of the cisterns, a football/soccer field, track, concessions stand, baseball/softball field, and park along Bayou St. John
-Practice fields for Roneagles during the week and the return of @williehallpanthersports in the evenings and on weekends.

This partnership between @nolaps, the @cityofnola, @nordcommission, @inspirenola, the federal government, and so many other entities (whose Instagram handles I can’t find) is truly incredible. Happy to have played a small part—and to make good on that conversation with Ms. Wanda five years ago.

❤️💛 🤝 🖤💛
