i’m going to doing a little series of Ogden Whitney appreciation posts for the rest of spooky season. if i could guess one thing about Whitney from his surreal and sometimes disturbing romance art was that he was an intense little guy. i love his work. it’s some of my favorite. his characters GO THROUGH it, even if only psychologically.

i once wrote a paper about the role of cars in romance comics. hint: they are never good and always lead to trouble. this story, “Tearful Deception,” from Love Memories no. 3 (May 1950), is an example of that.

happy first of the month! last week was no fun and i’m ready to start anew.

starting a new chapter on the dissertation today! this one requires a lot of creativity and pulling from a variety of source material.

this story is unique in that is from the man’s point of few. there were a few of them floating around and they are always interesting to look at.

i have been sick all week but i managed to get a chapter draft done, a fellowship application done (ty to my advisor and letter writers!!!! ♥️), and grade a third of my students’ essays.

love this panel sequence from “Nineteen and - Never Been Kissed!” Hi-School Romance no. 73 (March 1958). meta, romantic, sweet.
