What Boys Learn in the print version of the NYT last week. I shared this when it came out in digital form earlier, but it's even more exciting when a good review is in print. Thanks to several friends and colleagues who emailed me and took photos of the real newspaper version.
And thanks as always to my Soho editor Alexa @youcancallme__al and my Soho publicist @lilydetaeye!

Someday I’d like to swim an ice mile (below 41F/5C, no wetsuit) and before then (soon!) I’d like to swim a cold water 1K at 50F/10C. Those are goals. But most of my cold swimming has nothing to do with goals. It’s the opposite of goals. It’s just being in the water, in the present moment. #coldswimming by @romanolax

See that fog bank? I'm being literal! Today I had only one hour free in a packed work day and I drove to an area to run quickly and encountered a huge fogbank. I needed sun and fresh air, desperately! Over the last 24 hours I had managed to slip into a perilously bad mood, mostly because of state-of-the-world stuff, from AI to violent misogyny. I almost turned around and drove home. Then I decided to scout a road just two miles away and managed to get to an area with NO FOG—beautiful sunny fall day, even if I now had only 30 minutes to run before I had to hurry home and change for a Zoom event. I was so glad I didn’t just give up.

And it started me thinking: have I been trying hard enough to get out of the fog, or have I just been sitting and letting the fog settle over me? Let’s see. Scrolling: I’ve been doing it a lot more this week, probably because I’m feeling burnt out and stressed, and then every post about intractable problems just makes me more depressed. Writing: I’ve been waiting to feel absolutely sure I know which novel is next instead of trusting that as I write it, the certainty will come. Sleep: I’ve been staying up too late. So no, I have NOT been moving out of the fog bank, even though I know exactly what to do. And with that, I am signing off and going to jump into the cold ocean, because what even sun won’t cure, cold water usually does.

P.S. If you want to know more about my quest to cold swim 1K this winter (on my path, ultimately, to ice swimming; this is my third winter of habituating to the cold) let me know because I am willing to proselytize in multiple formats if I know anyone is curious about it. by @romanolax

Heading home from a fantastic and productive one week writing residency on Salt Spring Island thanks to @tpotratz Terri Potratz of Paper Covers Rock. (Residency apps at their website 🇨🇦). Finished my final big novel revision!

On the ferry: No cleats! Cinched them around my waist.

The trip home itself a symbol of how life really works: sure I biked a small *part* of the way, but that was only possible with literary org champion Terri moving my backpack (one of a hundred ways she was a wonderful hostess) and Brian picking me up across the water (and making 100% of Canadian Thanksgiving dinner while I continued to edit). Most great experiences—and all books— require a lot of help.

Grateful to be the first writer-in-residence at this lovely one week residency, enjoying meeting and talking about the craft of writing compelling narrative and asking questions that keep readers turning pages—with local writers thanks to @tpotratz @papercoversrock.ca. A wonderful community feeling plus lots of solo quiet as well—plus a SAUNA! (Following an eye-ball-popping cold swim at Beddis Beach about one mile away.) If you’re a writer in this part of the world, check out Paper Covers Rock; they’ll be open to future writers seeking residencies, willing to teach a seminar/workshop. In 48 hours I’ve already made some new friends and fallen even deeper in love with our Gulf Islands.
