Meet @romeoolukotun, a Changing Faces campaigner with burns scarring to his neck, chest and torso due to a hot water accident when he was a baby. This week, Children’s Burns Trust are asking everyone to #BeBurnsAware. Over 10,000 children were burned or scalded in 2025 and admitted to Specialist Burns Services across the UK. Ode to Scars A little while ago I had the privilege of sharing my story on a podcast. A topic that inspired me to write this poem. I wrote Ode to Scars as a conversation with my scars, but over time I’ve realised it isn’t just about me. It’s for anyone who’s ever felt different. Anyone who’s hidden a part of themselves. Anyone who’s wondered if they would ever feel comfortable in their own skin. Whether your difference is visible or invisible, I hope these words remind you that you don’t have to change who you are to be worthy of acceptance. If you’ve already listened to the podcast, this poem is the story behind that conversation. If you haven’t, check out @the_scars_podcast !! And if one person watches this and feels a little more seen, a little more understood, or a little more confident to be themselves… Then it was worth writing. Last week I had the privilege of representing @changingfacesuk at the @britishburnassociation Annual Conference. It was inspiring spending the day with clinicians, researchers, charities and professionals all working towards improving burn care and supporting people living with visible differences. As someone who has lived with burn scars since childhood, it’s always a reminder of how powerful it is when lived experience and healthcare come together. Conversations like these don’t just improve treatment—they help shape confidence, inclusion and the support people receive long after they leave hospital. Thank you to everyone who stopped by the Changing Faces stand for a chat. Looking forward to continuing the conversations and helping create a world where everyone with a visible difference is treated with respect and feels represented.
