HELLO AGAIN / LIFE UPDATE 💔

*Deep breath*… hi again, where to even start? It has taken me a long time to work up the courage and work through the initial grief to write this. On 6/1/24, my beloved orange boy, Romey, crossed the rainbow bridge. 🌈😿

Back in February, I was all set to make a post announcing that I was 4 months pregnant. I was going to take pics with our ultrasound photos in our home library and caption it something cute like “Newest book club member.” Then one night, Romey suddenly couldn’t breathe, and he was admitted to the ICU. Being the most amazing and resilient boy, he was discharged the next day with a little bald patch on his side where they drained fluid. Heart failure, they said. I knew then that we were on borrowed time, but I couldn’t help imagine what life would be like once our baby boy joined our furry family of four. My due date was 7/4; I thought surely we’d make it to that. Perhaps they’d get the chance to be best friends. Romey would stand guard by his bassinet. He would give him all of the head butts.

I spent the next 4 months doing everything possible to keep Romey alive and happy. So many medications. Countless trips to the pet store to try and get him to put on weight, or at the very least, keep eating. All the toys and all the treats. He was so happy through it all. We included him in our maternity shoot. He even joined us on our baby moon — I didn’t know at the time that it was his golden week and last hurrah. I didn’t know he would leave us two weeks later.

I miss him every day and am so happy to have been able to share him with this community. He was truly the best of my heart. RIP Romey 🧡

(And as far as epilogue, my baby was born early exactly 2 weeks later on 6/15/24. 👶🏻 He came out a spitting image of Romey complete with his pufferfish cheeks!) by @romeyreads

Is this not one of the most beautiful special editions you have ever seen?! And for one of the most beautiful books I have ever read! If you still haven’t read this gem of a book, DO IT! PLEASE!

This book is everything. ❤️ A perfect blend of romance, heartache, self-discovery, and a touch of magic — guaranteed there’s something in it for everyone. I will never stop gushing about this book and trying to convince the world to read it! Also because of this book, I’ve been buying everything with lemons on it. Clearly it’s one of those reads that have changed my brain chemistry, and I’m forever grateful for @heyashposton for writing it.

I can see why this is Ali Hazelwood’s favorite book to date! Three words to describe it? Sexy, (surprisingly) sweet, and Swedish 😂

I don’t know what it is about college romances that just hit so perfectly. It always feels so fun and nostalgic. I think I will only read sports romances now if they’re set in university or if they’re olympian divers and swimmers 😂

Lukas Blomqvist. 🔥 🌶️ 🏊🏼‍♂️ That’s it. Read the book, and you’ll get why no explanation needed.

This book has left me in pieces. 💔 It has been a while since a book has touched me this deeply, and I am so grateful to @booksparks for gifting me a copy of this incredible book.

I was captivated by every page. The story is somehow both quiet and world-shattering. The writing is so devastatingly beautiful. There’s an element of suspense right from the beginning that hooks you then keeps you on edge throughout. It straddles the line between drama and thriller so perfectly. I felt like I knew the characters on a personal level and have grown to love them — I will think about Beth, Frank, and Gabriel for years to come.

I love a book that makes me cry and that makes me feel deeply. Broken Country surely left me broken but what a beautiful story of love, impossible choices and its long lasting consequences, grief, heartbreak, the enormity of your first love, motherhood, secrets, and sacrifice. @clarelesliehall — this was masterful.

It has already optioned for film by Reese Witherspoon and is absolutely deserving of it. Bravo! 👏🏼

On Loverose Lane by Samantha Young is a second-chance/sports romance set in Edinburgh about entrepreneur Beth Carmichael and professional footballer Callan Keen, two characters with completely different upbringings whose high school romance came to an abrupt end only to find themselves reuniting unexpectedly 8 years later when Callan moves into Beth’s apartment building.

THINGS I LOVED 🧡
•I’m a sucker for second chance romance stories with dual POV and alternating timelines
•I’m not usually one for sports romance but this was very enjoyable! Callan’s teammate and best friend Baird was a standout side character for me and this book nicely sets up a sequel that I’m hoping will be his story
•Overall a really easy romance. The fake dating, tension, spicy scenes were all done well!

Excited to continue with this series!

Going to keep it general with my thoughts and feelings so as not to spoil it for anyone:

•I loved it! So glad I did an Iron Flame re-read right before this. Seems like a lot of people who didn’t enjoy Onyx Storm as much said they forgot what happened in book 2 🤦🏻‍♀️
•Xaden Xaden Xaden 🧡
•The whole scene with “Did you two ride a lot when you were younger?” 😂
•I realized I have too much anxiety and motion sickness to ever be a rider, so scribe quadrant it is 📚
•THIS is how you keep fans interested when a romantasy series is 3+ books long

✨ What’s everyone’s favorite book in the series so far? For me, it’s still Fourth Wing 😻

✨WHAT IT’S ABOUT
This story begins with Amber, a teenager who passed away tragically at the age of seventeen right before graduation, who suddenly shows up at her parents’ house 7 years after her death. While she remains seventeen, her family and home town have been dealing with the aftershocks of her tragic passing for the last 7 years and Amber is left to witness the toll that grief and loss have taken on those she loves.

✨MY THOUGHTS
This YA book tackles a lot of difficult topics including grief, death, loneliness, betrayal, and religion/faith. I love the alternating timelines and how the author writes in multiple POVs of characters that are seemingly unconnected into an intricately woven story that spans nearly 25 years. There were moments in the book where I got literal goosebumps — so many twists considering the book itself is only 261 pages. I also love that the author introduced various perspectives of death amongst different cultures and sheds light on how the Western world focuses on the “finality” of death. And as someone who has experienced her fair share of loss in the last couple of years, this new take on life after death and how our loved ones live on in more ways than we can imagine was so refreshing.

Wow did this book break me! So naturally, it gets 5 stars. 😂

✨WHAT IT’S ABOUT
This book follows the story of a married couple, Lauren and Ryan, who decide to take a yearlong separation with absolutely zero communication in hopes of saving their marriage and rediscovering themselves. Along the way, they try their best to navigate life without the other, all while learning from friends and family the importance of communication, honesty, and love in all its forms.

✨MY THOUGHTS
This is my new favorite TJR novel. But make no mistake, this book HURTS. I was wincing for the entire first part of the book and actually got that physical ache in my heart. You can feel the collapse of the relationship and the pain of both characters as they are left with no choice but to hurt each other in the name of trying to save themselves and their marriage.

✨WHAT I LOVED 🧡
-Rarely do we get to read about relationships after the honeymoon phase, so I loved how raw and messy this was
-Letters and e-mails — they get me every time 🖊️ ❤️
-The honesty! Imagine watching your partner fall out of love with you and all the hurtful words and actions that come with that. It is depicted so brutally and honestly. So painful to witness but my gods was it necessary
-I will listen to any book narrated by @justjuliawhelan . Name someone who does a better Grandma voice — I’ll wait

My Romantasy slump is officially over! Thank you, Phantasma 😍

This is the first book of the dark romantasy series by Kaylie Smith and it follows Ophelia, a necromancer, who enters the deadly competition, Phantasma, under dire circumstances when her sister goes missing. She strikes up a deal with a dangerous phantom named Blackwell to help her win the competition — the rules? Don’t fall in love, of course.

What a fun read and such a great start to 2025! This reminded me so much of the Kingdom of the Wicked series (and I LOVE me some Wrath 😍). I hear it’s also like Caraval but spicy, but I have yet to read that series.

It was fun watching Ophelia progress through the stages of the competition and even more fun seeing the forbidden romance play out. There’s a big twist at the end that definitely gave KOTW vibes — wish I hadn’t seen it coming!

Highly recommend! Will definitely be reading book 2 👍🏼

What a year it has been! 2024 has undoubtedly been the ultimate rollercoaster of a year, what with saying goodbye to my sweet boy Romey 🐱and saying hello two weeks later to my sweet baby boy 👶🏻.

Reading obviously took a backseat this year, but I’m still so proud of what I was able to accomplish amidst the chaos of 2024!

This book will forever be one of my absolute favorite romances of all time. I finished it three days ago and I’m still thinking about it. Tried to start another book but kept going back to this one and eventually reread the whole thing.

This novel follows former high school classmates Helen Zhang, a successful YA series author, and Grant Shepard, a screenwriter, who became bound by an unspeakable tragedy and are now forced to reunite 10 years later with the TV adaptation of Helen’s books. The first chapter sets the stage for this novel with the funeral of Helen’s sister, Michelle, as the opening scene and the reveal of Grant’s involvement. The main story starts a decade later when the two characters meet again in Los Angeles.

This story is such an emotional ride in the best possible way. Yulin Kuang’s writing is phenomenal — the banter, the story-telling, the emotional depth, the build-up of tension, the illustration of grief and yearning, the portrayal of an immigrant mother-daughter relationship in the AAPI culture, the depiction of how messy life and love can get, the show-not-tell of what it is to surrender to love and to fear losing it— it was MASTERFUL. You will feel all the feelings as you go on this emotional journey with Helen and Grant as they tumble into this relationship that feels both inevitable and impossible. I smiled, I laughed, I cried, I raged, I fell in love, I felt my heart break (in no particular order). To me, this novel was perfect. No notes!
