Exciting update on World Bee Day 🐝!! I was able to watch my new Queen Bee emerge from her Queen cell! What an absolute treat for me to witness this amazing event. ❤️ The bees will also be very happy for her to be in the hive. #rooftopbeekeeping #beekeeperlife #beekeepers #worldbeeday by @rooftop_alchemy

Move over emerald, rubys and sapphire, I prefer the jewel like colors you find in a frame of pollen. As the weather gets colder I am missing opening my beehives!

Ivy in bloom is a magnet for a plethora of pollinators and a crucial source of food as summer draws to a close.

I spotted bees, butterflies, hoverflies wasps and a european hornet feasting on its nectar or gathering pollen.

A simple ivy blossom can be the difference between survival and scarcity. It’s proof that even the most overlooked flowers hold magical importance.

Reminder: don’t cut back your ivy until after it’s flowered. You’ll not only protect your plants but also help feed the pollinators.

I had a great honey harvest season in The Netherlands this year harvesting from Alveole hives all over the country. From rooftops to harbours, swooping seagulls to steep staircases - it was an exciting few weeks!

Can you spot any hives you recognize?

Let the bees build it their way!

The worker bees building this wax comb are just 8 to 12 days old—this is the age they are able to produce wax. Their wax glands are in full swing, and without a foundation in the hive, they’re free to shape each cell exactly how they need it.

Allowing bees to build their own comb naturally means:
	•	They choose the right cell size for brood or food storage
	•	The hive stays in tune with their needs, not ours
	•	It supports healthier colony development
	•	There’s better airflow and fewer chemical residues

It’s a beautiful, more natural way of beekeeping—and the bees know exactly what they’re doing.

ROOFTOP ALCHEMY has a limited amount of LOCAL WILDFLOWER HONEY from 2024’s honey harvest!

Here is a very simplified photo story of the journey from a bee gathering nectar to the final product - a jar of liquid gold. 🍯

If you live near me (Leiden/Oegstgeest) and want to buy a pot for yourself then send me a PM for more info.

The sweetest workshop that I facilitate is showing people how to extract honey from the frame. It’s a sticky business but a lot of fun!

Beekeepers dream - chasing a swarm (barefoot down the road) while on holiday at Lake Como to see where it ended up.

Lucky for me it was a a friend’s house so I could sit and watch the cluster of bees situate on a tree near the lake.

Swarming is a means for colonies to reproduce; they are a natural part of honey bee biology. At first glance, a swarm can look scary with so many bees visible in one place; however, swarming bees are very docile. Scout bees were busy looking for an ideal new home while the swarm and the Queen rested on the tree with a gorgeous view of the lake. Less than 8 hours later they had moved on to a new location.

What a treat for me to see this on my holiday - especially as I was missing being around my bees 🐝.
