Can you help us get to $20k before our fundraiser ends?

With the brilliant support of our beloved community, we’ve managed to raise $16.2k. Though we’re far from our $80k goal, you’ve bought us time to keep going ⎯ and so we’re doing all we can.

Our updated fundraiser now features new items including:

 • personalized and signed copies of Eden Robinson’s The Sorceress of Sky Serpents, PLUS 100 pages of her upcoming sequel
 • hottest Halloween tix of the year, aka @birdhouseartspace x @manupvancouver
 • R.F. Kuang’s Katabasis, Arundhati Roy’s Mother Mary Comes to Me, Marlon James’ The Disappearers, and more
 • discounted Banff Centre event tix, a $250 discount on VIFF festival passes, and more

This is also your last chance to sign up for workshops by Chen Chen, Jessica Johns, Diana Khoi Nguyen, Cassandra Myers, Cassidy McFadzean, and Molly Cross-Blanchard!

Since 1975, we’ve published 2500 writers, printed 200 issues, and organized 500 events. We’ve had a good run ⎯ help us keep going for a little while longer. 💗 by @roommagazine

Room magazine is urgently fundraising to continue running our organization.

For over 50 years, our small nonprofit has carved out a space in “Canadian”literary publishing where underrepresented voices can thrive. We publish work by people of all marginalized genders, making a special effort to centre BIPOC, queer, and disabled voices, with longstanding partnerships with @indigenousbrilliance and @unboundreadingseries. We are committed to solidarity with global struggles against imperialism and capitalist extraction. To date, we’ve published over 2,500 writers from marginalized communities, organized over 500 literary events, and published almost 200 issues of our magazine.

Unfortunately, our staff have been facing enormous strain since 2025 due to a key staff member’s sudden departure. This difficult transition period required us to pause operations, which included printing issues, processing submissions, applying for grants, reconciling accounts, and conducting other vital operational activities.

The events of 2025, and the mismanagement leading up to it, puts Room’s survival at risk in a way that cannot be resolved without community support. We are struggling, with staff working unpaid overtime and at great personal detriment, taking on large amounts of work that are outside of their job descriptions, to keep the lights on.

Given the recent shutdowns of feminist publishers like Jezebel and Bitch Media, feminist literature is more crucial than ever, especially in times of rising fascism and book bans. Room is one of the most integrally diverse spaces in “Canadian” publishing today, and we need your help to keep it that way.

Please check out our galabid fundraiser, featuring generous donations by beloved presses, writers, artists, arts and culture organizations, and more.

We know $80k may sound like a huge sum, but if each of our 28k followers donated $5, we would meet our goal immediately. We know, too, that times are hard for everyone—we’re far from the only ones fundraising—and appreciate every bit you’re able to spare.

ROOM unequivocally commits to PACBI and reiterates our commitment to the liberation of the Palestinian people.

At the Board of Directors meeting on March 24, 2024, Room Magazine decided to join a growing number of academic, artistic, and cultural institutions in committing to the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI), which “advocates for a boycott of Israeli academic and cultural institutions for their deep and persistent complicity in Israel’s denial of Palestinian rights that are stipulated in international law.” PACBI is part of the Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement. PACBI focuses on institutions rather than targeting individuals directly.

This statement took longer than expected as we consulted our entire Growing Room Collective and confirmed details related to distribution at Indigo.

Short stories are one of our favourite forms of storytelling at the Festival. Come hear from the authors of three exceptional short story collections at #VWF2026!

The clever, wry stories in @DelBauchery Dina Del Bucchia’s Tougher Than the Rest investigate the ripple effects of wealth disparity on women. Chanel Sutherland @csutherwrites traces the lives of Caribbean immigrants navigating life and identity in Canadian cities in her linked short story collection, Layaway Child. Amal El-Mohtar @amalelmohtar offers glimpses into gleaming worlds and fairy tales with teeth, and a plethora of award-winning stories, in Seasons of Glass and Iron. Moderated by Corinna Chong.

Writers and artists, we want you! (Yes, we pay!)

Our call for submissions is open for writing and art on any theme that takes risks, refuses, and questions the status quo. We’re drawn to writing about societal constructs, the various arms of fascism, and everything strange in between, including work that reflects the times while resisting easy lessons.

While Room is urgently fundraising to survive, we are also working on new issues and planning for our future ⎯ reaffirming our commitment to ensure that feminist literature is produced, printed, and reaching readers uninterrupted. We appreciate your continued support.
