THINKING HANDS

Opening 13 september 2026
Locatie: THEA, Niemeyer, Paterswoldseweg 43, Groningen

Met en door: Frida Orupabo, Jan Robert Leegte, Jane Jin Kaisen, Kévin Bray, Kiki Mager, Kvam/Oldereid, Laure Prouvost, Lisa Oppenheim, Loïe Fuller, Mandy Franca, Martha Rosler, Martina Bacigalupo, Paul Kooiker, Rebekka Deubner, Robin de Puy / Strijbos & van Rijswijk, Vera van der Burg, WERC, Xhanti Zwelendaba & Ben Stanwix.

Gecureerd door Musoke Nalwoga en Roosje Klap

THINKING HANDS

Technology is taking over more and more of what we do, but what do we lose along the way?

Thinking Hands is about the knowledge that lives in the body: in making, in touching, in feeling. The exhibition brings together photographers and image-makers who ask what shifts when technology increasingly takes that over. Knowledge that can't simply be digitised. What does the body know that the mind doesn't?

On behalf of his family, I share with great sadness that graphic-, type- and motion designer, jazz pianist and dear friend Mitch Paone passed away peacefully at his home in Chamonix on Tuesday 23 June, 2026.

Mitch was light, and full of love, and there was no one quite like him. He was generous in the way that only people with real conviction are generous. Everyone who spent time with him left changed.

Mitch Paone was 43 and in the middle of everything.

”Time itself is being, and all being is time.”
— Eihei Dōgen, Uji, c.1240

His ideas, as he always intended, will keep running without him.

Out of respect for his family and loved ones, we ask that you refrain from reaching out directly at this time. A space for condolences and shared memories will be announced soon. taken in Chamonix, France by @roosjeklap

I believe in an online space where everyone feels safe and respected—where women+ are treated with dignity, vulnerable communities can express themselves freely, and gender and orientation are accepted. A place to share all emotions, from joy to anger. This means moving away from tech giants that put profit over people.

Big Tech’s dominance is no longer sustainable. After my previous Blue Monday call to public institutions to make social media truly social again, I’m taking action. In February, I’m doing a Digital Detox—no posts on Meta or other Big Brother Tech platforms, but actively joining the Little Sisters.

Ready to leave and join the sisters? Swipe for alternatives! And feel free to share the tiles. Find these and other tiles on MakeSocialsSocialAgain.nl

Take the toys from the boys!

The reliance on Big Tech’s social media platforms is no longer sustainable. That’s why Noorderlicht, together with @bitsoffreedom, @degoedezaaknl, @public__spaces, and @waagnl, is launching the campaign #MakeSocialsSocialAgain.

Today, I’m calling on all public organizations to embrace and promote alternative social media platforms—platforms built on transparency, privacy, and sustainability. Together, we can make social media social again. Will you join us? Visit MakeSocialsSocialAgain.nl and discover what you can do! (Photo @robin_de_puy) LINK IN BIO by @roosjeklap
