This is a story about me, who I am and what I love to do…

In order to really know me you need to know where I’m from. I grew up on Orcas Island in Washington with the sea in my backyard. Although I still love the ocean I traded in my surfboard and kayak for a snowboard and climbing gear then headed to the Rocky Mountains where I chose to settle in Boulder, Colorado. It was here where my adventure filmmaking career really took off.

I worked as a drone operator for Netflix shows, directed and camera operated for some of the biggest outdoor brands and even starred in my own online tv show about surfing and environmental conservation for Outside Magazine.

It was through these experiences that I learned my life shouldn’t just about taking pretty pictures or making beautiful videos. I wanted to share stories that spoke to people, that brought a smile to the face and wonder to they’re minds. In an effort to bring more positivity into the world, I’m choosing to share uplifting stories of hope, joy, and adventure.

So while there’s still a lot to me you may not know yet, I want to you walk away with this…
Outdoor adventure is my passion, storytelling is my purpose

Showing people that I care about them, celebrating others achievements and holding up a mirror to the integrity I see in these amazing communities I work with is what my career is all about.

Thanks for watching, I love you and have the best day ever.

My time filming The Trail House has come to an end…

I jumped into this project at the beginning of July with a pretty fun goal - follow a group of guys living together in Boulder and document what actually happens when they go all-in on trying to become professional trail runners.

And man, we got a lot in two months!

Moving into the house, early morning workouts to escape the Boulder summer heat, Ares working his way back from injury and eventually putting on a Team USA kit. Bayden sending huge mountain days, having his goal race cancelled, then jumping into a 100K anyway. Dylan running the biggest mountain day of his life up Pikes Peak and then going on to win the Whistler 100K. Creek swims, Flatiron adventures, blood work, mini golf, Catan, MRI waiting rooms, a bunch of e-biking next to them as they ran super fast, and plenty of random moments around the house that somehow became some of my favorite parts of the films.

More than anything, I loved getting to make something that felt genuinely optimistic and joyful.
We rarely knew what was going to happen when I showed up with a camera, and that uncertainty ended up being the greatest gift of the project. We all got up to some fun shenanigans telling their stories.

I’m moving on from the project to make room for some other work and stories I’m excited to chase, but I’m really grateful I got to help establish the beginning of The Trail House and tell these guys’ stories for the first couple months.

Huge thanks to Dylan, Bayden, Ares, Jon, Brad, Emory, Matt, the sponsors, and everyone else who chatted with me behind the camera all summer.

And especially thanks to everyone who watched, commented, shared the episodes, and got invested in these guys.
The Trail House keeps going from here, and I’ll definitely be following along. My final episode just went live today so go check it out!

Go give the guys a follow and keep cheering them on. I have a feeling their stories are just getting started ❤️

On to the next one 🤙🏻 by @roosmith6

I’ve spent a lot of my career making films where the story is pretty well thought through before the cameras arrive. Normally, knowing how a story ends can help determine if it’s something worth telling.

The Trail House is different.

With The Trail House, we want to be there before anyone knows what the story is. Before the breakthrough race, the setback, the contract, or the injuries.

The races matter, but so do the MRI waiting rooms, the half-built basement gym, the first encounters with new roommates, calls home, tired mornings, and long stretches where progress is hard to see.

I want this series to feel less like a polished film about runners and their successes and more of an honest look at what it means to chase your dreams.

What moves me most isn’t only whether they become professionals. It’s who they become while trying and what happens when someone gives themselves a chance to pursue the thing they care about most.

This project feels like a return to why I picked up a camera in the first place: to get close to people, share stories about my passions, and explore the great outdoors.

Very grateful to be trusted with these videos and to be a part of such an amazing team bringing this project to life!

In celebration of Global Running Day, here are a few of my favorite moments from past films I’ve shot and directed over the years 🎉

Since moving to Boulder in 2020, trail running has become such a core part of my life. Unlike other outdoor sports that require a lot of gear and time, it’s so easy to just grab running shoes, go outside and explore.
I met my wife through trail running (we were run buddies even before we started dating). I traveled the world through trail running, crossing borders, reaching summits and meandering through forests. I pushed myself physically, creatively, and emotionally because of this sport.

Running has given so much to my life and my career and has introduced me so many of you reading this post. It’s become a sport that’s hard to live without.

So, stay tuned because there’s many more running stories coming to you beginning this summer. More on that later but it’s going to be an exciting year for my camera to get out on some trails!

*Also, the majority of these shots are mine but some are from a small handful of other amazing cinematographers I’ve been fortunate enough to work with as I stepped away from the camera to direct the storytelling for the documentary or commercial 🤙🏼 taken in Boulder, Colorado by @roosmith6

For this one, I was using a Sony a7siii (as per usual), a 14mm lens, and a shotgun mic while filming rock climbing. That’s it.

A 14mm lens is one of my favorite tools for climbing because it gives a more complete and dynamic perspective when I’m on the wall with the climbers.

Plus, the wide angle lens allows the viewer to clearly see the climber, the rock, the exposure, the hands, the feet, the rope, and that tiny hesitation where someone starts to wonder how they’re going to keep moving upward.

With climbing, the hard part is that the sport doesn’t always explain itself on camera. A casual viewer might not know which hold is bad, which foot matters, or why a tiny shift in body position makes the whole sequence work.

So the job is to get close enough for the movement to feel specific, but wide enough for the viewer to understand the world around it.

For this shot, I’m thinking through a few things at once:

Where is the climber going?
Where is my rope?
Where is the fall line?
What move matters most?
Can I make the wall feel as tall as it felt as I was tethered to it?

That’s what I love most when filming climbing.
You’re not just filming someone going up a wall.
You’re filming patience, fear, trust, movement, failure, focus, and the decision to try again and again. by @roosmith6
