There's an arbitrary guideline that freshly expressed or pumped breastmilk can only be stored at room temperature for *up to* 4 hours.

Then there's the whole 2 hour "rule" after your baby drinks from a bottle - some people have even told me *one* hour. I have a hard time believing that breastmilk created *specifically* for my baby could be tainted by "bacteria" from my baby, causing it to spoil or go bad just two hours after he drank from it...

So what happens to milk that sits at room temperature for more than four hours? Some studies actually show that nothing happens (no bacteria growth- even after 24-48 hours)... Not that you need a study to tell you this.

The guidelines are merely guidelines....based on an (incorrect, imo) assumption that bacteria "could" grow, especially if baby's mouth has touched the bottle. During both of my pumping journeys I have questioned these timelines for freshly pumped breastmilk. I have left milk out overnight before and it still smelled/tasted fine, so I fed it to my baby. Even if my baby has drank from a bottle, I will let it sit for hours (above the recommended timeframe) and just give it a sniff before I feed it again.

I have had one instance of breastmilk sitting out in the heat for an extended period that had a funky smell that my baby refused. No illness occurred. You *will* know if the smell is off and the milk isn't good to drink.

after two home births, I didn’t know what my third birth would look like, especially because it was my first time taking a field trip to the hospital!

a 2am water break, a whirlwind morning, a hospital arrival just 28 minutes before birth… and a surprise we waited nine months for.

loved our weekend getaway to the @omnihomestead even if the long drive made baby flip breech. luckily, baby knew what to do and flipped back into the birthing position! aaaand now it’s officially baby month! 🍂👶 we can’t wait to meet you baby 💗💙 by @rootcausewithcara

BECAUSE BABY #3 IS HEAD DOWN and ready for arrival! 🙌 after a few weeks of uncertainty re:baby’s positioning, baby turned from being in a frank breech position.

I was mentally + emotionally preparing for a c-section in case baby didn’t flip. I wasn’t doing a ton of spinning babies, just seeing my chiropractor, doing one forward leaning inversion a week, a couple handstands and flips in the pool, and trusting baby 🙏🙏

Some days I just don’t want to take 8 prenatal capsules. 😂

There, I said it.

Especially when I’m already trying to time my thyroid medication and iron supplement throughout the day. If I miss something or take a dose late, suddenly my entire supplement schedule feels like a puzzle. 🧩😅

The boys’ room is finally finished 🥹

Moving our boys (2 & 4) into one room felt like a big transition, but they’re loving it so far.

We chose full-size beds instead of twins because they’ll grow with them for years, there’s plenty of room for bedtime snuggles, and one of us can comfortably sleep beside them if needed.

We also wanted mattresses made with high-quality, non-toxic materials—and they’re so comfortable that every person in our house sleeps on one!
