Dirga Pranayama | Three-Part Breath

A breathwork practice I return to again and again.

Our breath is one of the few functions of the autonomic nervous system that we can consciously influence.

When we’re stressed or overwhelmed, our breathing often becomes shallow and rapid. By intentionally slowing the breath, we can support the parasympathetic nervous system, including pathways associated with the vagus nerve, helping the body move toward a state of greater rest and regulation.

I personally love how this particular breath invites us to explore the relationship between body, mind, and spirit.

In Dirga Pranayama, we explore three spaces within the breath:

The Belly | Grounding
An invitation to return to the physical body, cultivate stability, and reconnect with the present moment.

The Ribcage | Emotional Flow
An invitation to create space for feeling, softness, and adaptability. A reminder that we can expand without holding on. This helps to also create more emotional capacity for those who are moving through grief or currently Acting and playing highly emotional roles.

The Upper Chest | Awareness
An invitation to expand our awareness, quiet the constant chatter of the mind, and reconnect with something beyond our habitual thoughts. This area of the body helps to open us up to further community and a higher purpose.

How to practice:

Find a comfortable seat or lie down.

• Begin breathing slowly in and out through your nose.
• Inhale into the belly, allowing it to gently expand.
• Continue that same inhale into the ribcage, feeling the ribs expand outward and into the back body.
• Complete the inhale by gently expanding into the upper chest, just beneath the collarbones.
• Exhale slowly, allowing the upper chest, ribs, and belly to soften.

Repeat for several rounds, allowing the three parts to gradually become one continuous, fluid breath. Keep the breath comfortable and unforced.

Observe the thoughts that come up during and after this.

From seeking validation to seeking present sensation.

How much time do we spend living in the imagined thoughts of other people? Wondering if we’re liked, if what we said was stupid, if we’re doing things right?

I caught myself there today. So I got on the floor and started moving.

Here’s a little movement exploration to invite you back into the present moment.

Begin in a neutral tabletop position. Bring one knee out to the side, externally rotating the hip, with the knee bent and the sole of the foot resting on the floor.

If your mind is particularly busy, begin with simple, continuous circles through the hips.

Listen to the movement. Where do you feel sensation? Where is there resistance or ease? What do circles feel like? Are you holding your breath?

Allow the breath to keep flowing.

As your attention settles into this body, this space, this moment, begin to abstract the movement.

Let the circles become less predictable. Change direction. Shift your rhythm. Follow a sensation or an impulse. Get curious about where the movement wants to go.

What if there was no shape to achieve. Nothing to perfect. No one to impress.

Sometimes curiosity gives the validation-seeking voice a little less room to speak. We begin to feel the floor beneath us, our relationship to the earth, and the simple experience of being here.

We’re so often reaching for the next moment. The next accomplishment. The next affirmation. Wondering “Why me?” or “Why not me?”

But what about this moment?

What about slipping into the fullness of what’s already here?

This fleeting, extraordinary, present moment. by @rootedgingeryogi

🌊 Full Body Waves 🌊

I love moving my whole system in ripples like this.

Life moves in waves and it’s the season to jump in the ocean so seems appropriate to share some wave like movement. Embody the natural world, babe!

Great for first thing in the morning, to cool down after a performance, or for a quick little jolt mid day before you start your creative endeavors.

Your spine is your life force energy so get it moving and grooving.

This is a quick mobility flow to get into the fascia - the living web that wraps, slides, holds, and communicates through the whole body.

You start at the foot because the body is not a collection of separate parts. The sole of the foot speaks into the calf, the hamstring, the pelvis, the spine, the shoulders, the jaw, the crown of the head.

Everything echoes.

This flow wakes up the foot, stabilizes the pelvis, opens the hip rotators, mobilizes the spine, and gives the lymphatic system a little nudge - flushing out the body from the inside.

Repeat the threading pattern at least three times to invite a PNF response: contract, soften, and let the body find a little more space.

Then let it become less about shapes and more about sensation and deep listening.

Explore the pathways.
Explore the negative space.
Let the whole body slurp, ripple, pour, and echo between the edges of your reach.

Big exhales.
Soft jaw.
Energy beyond the toes.
Energy beyond the crown of the head.

A quick way to return to the body before your day begins or before your creative endeavor.
