In the Himalayas, the snow leopard is more than just a rare wild cat. In many Himalayan communities, these cats are deeply respected and woven into local folklore, spiritual beliefs, and the relationship people share with the mountains. 🙏🏔️

But beyond the stories, they play a vital role in the mountain ecosystem by helping regulate populations of wild sheep and goats, including blue sheep and Asiatic ibex. As an apex predator, the snow leopard is also an important indicator of the health of these fragile high-altitude landscapes.

Found across the rugged mountains of Ladakh, these elusive cats survive at incredible altitudes, perfectly adapted to the cold, rocky terrain. Seeing one in fresh snowfall is a moment you never really forget. ❄️🐆

KARGIL. When the Zoji La pass closes and snow cuts Kargil off, food has to do more than look good. It has to last. What is available is on your plate, then. Ingredients and recipes shaped by altitude, scarcity, trade, displacement and the long winter ahead.

For TFTA, I travelled through Kargil’s kitchens, villages and landscapes with Yash Saxena, author of Stories from a Kargili Kitchen, looking at the food that remains, the food that is disappearing, and the people keeping both alive.

These photographs are a glimpse of that journey: food, faces and a beautiful yet trying landscape.

ROOTS CAFÉ x SURUFEST

This year at Surufest, we’re bringing a little more café culture to the festival.

While the main Surufest kitchen will remain completely vegetarian, Roots Café will have its own menu, including a selection of non-vegetarian delicacies alongside café-style food, snacks, and drinks.

Based out of Kargil, Roots is a travellers’ café that understands what a good café means when you’re on the road — a place to take a break, meet people, share stories, and enjoy food that’s a little different from the usual festival fare.
