our annual Fall Fire Cider Celebration is in one week, sunday 10/18!! and tbh this year feels extra special. not only is it our 13th year hosting this seasonal ritual of community resilience and nourishment but it is also the first year we grew all of the fire cider ingredients (besides the citrus) for the celebration here in our gardens!
🧄
we have always used all local ingredients and always had (and still have) so many sweet connections to the local growers represented in the celebration... and it feels like such an incredible blessing to have been a part of growing all of the garlic, onion, ginger, turmeric, horseradish, hot peppers and herbs that will be transformed into the medicine everyone takes home.
🧅
we have been harvesting and prepping your fire cider ingredients all day and we are so excited for you to come create spicy resistance with us! our celebration is open to all folks who believe that our connection to the land has always and will always save/sustain us, so register today and bring a friend!
🫚
this year we will have a farm stand, open apothecary, a hot chili bar, farm tours, fire, AND we will be running our community hydrosol still for the first time! join us!
🌶️
and a special thank you to all the farms who have helped make the celebration possible in the past, @youthfarmproject @rockyacrescommunityfarm Spice of Life Farm, Tree Gate Farm and so many others! and a super special thank you to @littletreeorchards for the apple cider, we couldn't make fire cider without you! and the deepest gratitude to the farmers who helped grow all of the ingredients this year in our gardens, @oftheforestfarm and @irunskillets there is no fire cider or jane minor gardens without you!!

Earlier this year, when Rootwork Herbals began envisioning what we wanted our Black August immersion to look like, we thought about the physical, mental, and emotional nourishment needed to maintain the tenants of Black August: Train, Study, and Fight.

✨

We wanted to explore how we collectively build the embodiment practices necessary to persevere through the tyrannical regimes of the time.

✨

The respite that we hoped to create needed to center somatic practices, rooted in black tradition, that both grounded and enlivened. As Amanda and I are both lovers of claywork and have felt all the ways the practice has gifted us this kind of fortification, we decided on a clay immersion 🏺

✨

During our clay immersion, members from our Black community came to the the Jane Minor Garden for 3 days of grounding into self, remembering black craft tradition, and relishing in a play that supports our prospering.

✨

throughout the weekend we:

💚Acquainted with the medicines
💚Communed by the fire
💚Deeply listened to Yoruba clay creation mythos
💚Splashed in the creek
💚Played fingers deep in the clay
💚Challenged the erasure of black clay histories
💚Learned hand building methods and techniques
💚Nourished our bodies with farm fresh food
💚Found embodiment and release in the somatic arts
💚And cultivated bonds that stand at the crux of our movements

✨

So grateful for the time, space, and shared company. Thank you so much to everyone who joined us. We hope this will be one of many immersion celebrating the clay☺️💕

✨

We also want to extend a big thank you to community arts partnership @community_arts_partnership for helping to make this event possible! 🥰

join us this sunday 8/16 for our August Garden Work Party!!
🍉
we will share watermelon from the garden, prep the CSA garden beds for fall planting, harvest herbs, make medicine and strain and bottle medicine for next weeks free CSA distribution. come put the Community Support in Community Supported Agriculture!
🍉
the weather tomorrow looks perfect for outdoor work, 75 with clouds and a very slight chance of sprinkles at the end of the day. come bring your friends, family, loved ones and help support free food and medicine for your friends, family and loved ones!
🍉
work parties are open to all folks who know or care to know, that the origins of CSA's are Black and came from the brilliance of Booker T Whatley's Clientele Membership Clubs in the 60's. these clubs served as a community based means of survival thru mutual support between Black farmers and Black families ensuring access to nourishment and income. CSA's are rooted in Black resistance, and all folks interested in uplifting that legacy are welcome to come!

Calling all farmers, land workers, herbalists, artists, and more!

As conditions continue to worsen across the globe and the flow of mutual aid begins to dwindle, it is essential that we remain steadfast in our support for communities facing the brunt of imperial and colonial violence. Join the Seeds of Solidarity Funding Drive and support the vital work of these farmers.

The link to register is in my bio. We want to get 100 farms and orgs on board this year, so please spread the word! by @rootworkherbals

REMEMBERING THE CLAY THAT FORMED US - an immersion with clay & herbs. august 14-16. with special guest facilitator, clayworker and herbalist Taylor Rae @theraeflower
🪴
a FREE immersion, in celebration of Black August for the Black Community.
🪴
Remembering the Clay that Formed Us, is a free/ donation based, 3 day weekend clay and herbal immersion that supports connection with the land, the recalling of craft, and joy in togetherness. Clay and claywork has a rich and widely forgotten legacy within the Black community. From cultural preservation, food, celebration, protection, spiritual connection, and more, clay and the creation of clay vessels, faces, and objects played a central role in Black culture and tradition, originating from the African continent, and surviving through enslavement, emancipation, and beyond. Unfortunately, these crafts and histories became wildly inaccessible for many through hundreds of years of intentional erasure, the colonization of indigenous craft, and the subsequent bolstering of “fine arts”. During this weekend we will remember as an act of liberation, we will play with clay, learn hand building techniques, and construct forms influenced by clay art, vessels, and sculptures from our lineage: face jugs, water vessels, protective amulets, burial vessels, and more.

join us in the creek bed digging clay, in the garden harvesting herbs and by the fire remembering.

the air is forecasted to be safe tomorrow, so the work party is ON for sunday 7/19!
🌬️
that said, given the air quality we have experienced for the last few days, we will keep things easy tomorrow in the garden. some weeding in the free CSA garden, some chatting, some medicine making, some snacking, and some drinking of lung support tea.
🌬️
as always, masks will be available. and the air purifier will be running in the herb cabin for those wanting to stay indoors.
🌬️
everyone will be strongly encouraged to take home herbs and strategies to support their lungs, hearts and spirits as we navigate together the new reality of fire season.
🌬️
the weather is supposed to be in the low 70's and partly sunny. the ground will be moist with the recent rain making the weeding and the vibes easy. we hope you can join us!
🌬️
work parties are open to everyone who understand that the dangers of fire season we are now experiencing in the northeast are created by capitalism and that healing from the dangers of fire season in the northeast will be created by community
