Earlier this year, when Rootwork Herbals began envisioning what we wanted our Black August immersion to look like, we thought about the physical, mental, and emotional nourishment needed to maintain the tenants of Black August: Train, Study, and Fight.

✨

We wanted to explore how we collectively build the embodiment practices necessary to persevere through the tyrannical regimes of the time.

✨

The respite that we hoped to create needed to center somatic practices, rooted in black tradition, that both grounded and enlivened. As Amanda and I are both lovers of claywork and have felt all the ways the practice has gifted us this kind of fortification, we decided on a clay immersion 🏺

✨

During our clay immersion, members from our Black community came to the the Jane Minor Garden for 3 days of grounding into self, remembering black craft tradition, and relishing in a play that supports our prospering.

✨

throughout the weekend we:

💚Acquainted with the medicines
💚Communed by the fire
💚Deeply listened to Yoruba clay creation mythos
💚Splashed in the creek
💚Played fingers deep in the clay
💚Challenged the erasure of black clay histories
💚Learned hand building methods and techniques
💚Nourished our bodies with farm fresh food
💚Found embodiment and release in the somatic arts
💚And cultivated bonds that stand at the crux of our movements

✨

So grateful for the time, space, and shared company. Thank you so much to everyone who joined us. We hope this will be one of many immersion celebrating the clay☺️💕

✨

We also want to extend a big thank you to community arts partnership @community_arts_partnership for helping to make this event possible! 🥰

Calling all farmers, land workers, herbalists, artists, and more!

As conditions continue to worsen across the globe and the flow of mutual aid begins to dwindle, it is essential that we remain steadfast in our support for communities facing the brunt of imperial and colonial violence. Join the Seeds of Solidarity Funding Drive and support the vital work of these farmers.

The link to register is in my bio. We want to get 100 farms and orgs on board this year, so please spread the word!

This spring NEFOC headed to Ithaca, NY for the Bridging Land, Agriculture, and Communities Conference (BLACC).

BLACC was intended to uplift the ongoing contributions of Black agriculturalists to New York State’s agrifood systems and provide reflective, informative gathering spaces for agriculturalists.

Many thanks to the people at Black Farmers United of New York State @bfu_nys for organizing this conference and inviting us to participate.

Earlier this month, we headed to Ithaca, New York for the Bridging Land, Agriculture, and Communities Conference (BLACC).

Hosted by Black Farmers United of New York State (BFU-NYS), BLACC gathered small-scale farmers, food entrepreneurs, advocates, and community leaders dedicated to building a stronger, resilient, and more connected food system.

The multi-day event included skillshares, workshops, and panel discussions such as “The Revolution Will Be Funded” fire chat featuring BFF president, Olivia Watkins. They also hosted farm tours at Rootwork Herbals, NuLegacy’s People’s Land, and more!

We had a blast being in fellowship with agriculturalists and food system leaders at BLACC. Plenty thanks to BFU-NYS for inviting us to participate at this uplifting event.

Had an amazing weekend at Building Land and Community Conference hosted by @bfu_nys .

I've said it many times this week but I've never been to a conference that had such an intersectional convo of land access , farming and cooperatives.

Got to see the future last few days and it gives a lot of hope for the work.

Rootwork Herbals is a community-driven initiative dedicated to cultivating wellness through plants and education, and has the Jane Minor BIPOC community medicine garden. This garden serves as a healing space where BIPOC individuals can connect with the earth, grow their food, and learn about herbal medicine. I was happy to start my day this morning with a visit to their farm to learn more about the great work they do in our district.

Let’s talk stress & anxiety support for trans+ comrades — there are plant allies that want to help!

•─────────•°•⨳•°•─────────•

In my experience, the constant vigilance required for code switching, masking, & navigating social safety creates a very specific type of nervous system stress.

Additionally, if your nervous system is in overdrive, the hormones you’re taking are probably nowhere near as effective as they could be.

•─────────•°•⨳•°•─────────•

So, E have been working on a formula to help support the nervous system, heart, and gut-brain connection:

Gender Walker Tincture

6 parts Milky Oats/Coirce (Avena Sativa)
3 parts Wood Betony/Lus na beatha (Betonica Officinalis)
2 parts Skullcap/Cochall (Scutellaria latifloria/ galericulata)
2 parts Lemon Balm/Lus na meala (Melissa officinalis)
2 parts Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca)*
1 part Lavender/Labhandar

E have been finding 2-3 ml twice a day a good practice — thrice daily when needed

*Emmenagogue (promotes menstrual flow) and should be avoided with wanted pregnancy

Consider this part ov a larger holistic protocol alongside quality rest, time with plants & others, doing what movement one can, working with bitters & ferments, as well as building community power, resilience and resistance — all the foundational stuff.

•─────────•°•⨳•°•─────────•

For more trans+ herbalism, E highly recommend the work ov Ayet @doll.herbalism & Rowan @hawthornandyew & Ember @wildcurrentherbs

E also have to give boundless thanks to the plants, writers, & comrades who have given me the relationships & language to explore plant medicine more deeply + so that E can share more ov this with you — and the two radical trans women who ran an underground surgery clinic that helped me out so much all those many years ago.

Grá mór agus míle buíochas to my liberatory herbcare teachers @herbalistafreeclinic @rootworkherbals @solidarity.apothecary & my current house ov radical botanical education @terrasylvaschool
