WELCOME TO OUR SLAM SEASON!!! 🎉🙌🏾

From August to December, The Writer’s Den hosts its in-season poetry slams, all leading up to the Grand Slam in January. Poets earn points at each slam they participate in.

Point Breakdown:
1st place: 5 points
2nd place: 4 points
3rd place: 3 points
4th place: 2 points
5th and lower: 1 point

At the end of the season, the top 10 scorers advance to compete in our Grand Slam.

The top 5 ranked poets of the Grand Slam become The Writer’s Den team for the Southern Fried Poetry Slam, one of the largest poetry competitions and festivals in the country.

Whether you’re here to compete or simply enjoy the show, our slams are the place to be on first Sundays.

Sign-Up: First come, first serve at the door.
Max 10 poets for the slam.

3 Rounds: 10 poets start. 7 advance to Round 2, 4 to the Final Round.

Clean Slate: Scores reset each round.

Original Work Only

Scoring: 5 judges score 0.0–10.0.
High & low scores dropped; middle 3 added.
Max Score in a round is a 30.

Order: Random draw each round.

Time Limit: 3:10 max.
Go over = disqualification.
Time starts with first word or intentional movement.

No Props
Reading is okay, but don’t reference your page or device, doing so = disqualification.

Winner receives a small cash prize.

TAKE YO ASS TO THERAPY... but remember it's not a one stop shop.

Okay so boom...Things got so bad in 2025 that I almost didn't make it out. And one of the things that contributed to that was I stopped going to therapy. Then I hit a wall (not literally) and found myself in a place where I HAD to go back. A lot happened through the rest of that year that led me into some huge life changes in 2026. Seeing my therapist on a regular basis put a lot of things into perspective. The healing journey that I've been on since this year started caused those huge life changes. It was painful but it was necessary, and it put me into what is now one of the best chapters in my life. I'm so excited to experience this part of my journey. And just because life is amazing right now doesn't mean I've stopped going to therapy now. I still check in. I still process the trauma I've experienced over the last two years and a few childhood things that were unresolved. It's all connected. Therapy is never " puppies and rainbows". There's a lot of digging that has to happen and you've got to be okay with the discomfort. That's how we grow. That's how we become better versions of ourselves. Love y'all.
