Erastus

One of my favorite things from Corinth and I had to go searching for it! Can you see the name? The marker says “Erastus in return for his aedileship paved it at his own expense.” Erastus was greeted by Paul in Romans 16:23, 2 Tim 4:20. He was the aedile (oversees the public works/city manager) of Corinth. He personally paid for the road outside of the theater to be paved. Why do scholars and historians think it’s the same person Paul addressed? Erastus isn’t a common name (kind of like Roscoe …unless you’re a dog!). It’s highly unlikely there were two Erastus in Corinth that held the same elected office of aedile during a 20-30 year window. It’s like two pastors in Clifton Park being named Roscoe. It shows the message of Jesus was impacting people from all different social economic positions…when there was nothing to be gained except persecution. taken in Ancient Corinth by @roscoelilly

I found it fascinating the juxtaposition of the broken down Temple of Apollo facing a church that worships Jesus. The Jesus that Paul preached in Corinth is still worshiped 2000 years later…all around the world. Acts 18:4-11 taken in Ancient Corinth by @roscoelilly

The Apostle Paul stood right here before the Roman Governor Gallio’s bema seat in Corinth. He was accused of persuading people to worship God in ways contrary to the Jewish law. Behind him was the temple to Apollo and on the top of the mountain (Acrocorinth) was the Temple of Aphrodite. Read Acts 19 today. Real people real places. taken in Ancient Corinth by @roscoelilly
