Our degree show is OPEN. Thank you to all who have visited so far. The show is open until Sunday. Please come visit - there is so much incredible work to see and amazing artists to meet.

12-8pm Friday
12-6pm Saturday & Sunday

This painting was a breakthrough for me. So including it as my degree show piece feels important.

I’ve been focusing on restless interactions in my paintings, between control and chaos, impulse and reason, freedom and constraint, the organic and the structured.

Nature is still very important in my practice and although not directly represented, it remains a consoling presence.

Since studying at the RCA, I’ve become more accepting of the importance of not knowing. For years I’ve been desperate to fully understand what my work is about. But I want my work to remain open, and this has allowed me to push my practice in new directions, continuously experimenting and embracing a new sense of freedom.

Come to the show ! I will be there every day 🌞 taken in Royal College of Art by @roseelectraharris

Ingram Prize × LAF
Alumni Interview - Rose Electra Harris

My main motivation for applying was feeling more confident in my practice & interest in how it would be viewed by the panel. I’d recently completed the Turps Correspondence Course (great btw) & the prize felt like a supportive opportunity for emerging artists. I wanted to keep momentum up, plus I knew & respected a lot of the artists that were shortlisted before.

You get accustomed to rejection, so [being shortlisted] was a major confidence boost. I’d been developing my work quietly, completing an artist residency 6 months prior. Being recognised when you put yourself out there feels really good.

Exhibiting at London Art Fair was an exciting surprise as it was something new for Ingram Prize finalists. I was reunited with old friend & fellow finalist, Hester Finch, for a duo presentation. It means a lot to show my work in person rather than online, as there is so much you lose digitally. You never know who might see the work and connect to it. Jo [Baring], Hester & I held a talk in the VIP lounge at the Fair & it started three new relationships - all of which are important to me still.

I was introduced to three curators, all of whom visited my studio after the Fair. I was put forward for a LAF prize the next year in collaboration with Visit Tampa Bay, which I won. I got to fly to Tampa Bay to experience the history & culture, & paint a 9m x 3m installation; I’d never painted a mural or anything that size! I find unexpected challenges inspiring & stimulating for my practice. The Ingram Prize organised events for those shortlisted; we had a whole day of talks to help our careers, including talks by Julie Lomax from a-n & art critic, Tabish Khan.

I’m coming to the end of my MA at the RCA, which I’ve loved. For years I’d been craving that sort of environment; I wanted to be around other artists & challenge my ideas on a deeper level. My work has developed & I’m embracing the uncertainty that is key to my practice. Being shortlisted for the Ingram Prize almost certainly gave me more confidence to apply to the RCA.

Don’t overthink it. Apply!

Introducing Rose Electra Harris @roseelectraharris (b. 1991), a British artist living and working in London. She has a BA in Printmaking from The University of Brighton.

Rose’s painting practice emerges through restless interactions, between control and chaos, impulse and reason, freedom and constraint, the organic and the structured. Moving between figuration and abstraction her work resists resolution.

She reimagines space, not as something fixed, but as something shifting, unstable, and continually unfolding. Nature acts as a consoling presence, not directly represented but always considered.

Rose embraces uncertainty, where not knowing becomes essential. There is a simultaneous search for meaning and resistance for closure. She wants the work to remain open, letting indeterminacy take its course. Within this, the paintings become spaces of freedom: a release of energy, urgency, and frustration, where feeling takes precedence over figuration.
