Ingram Prize × LAF
Alumni Interview - Rose Electra Harris

My main motivation for applying was feeling more confident in my practice & interest in how it would be viewed by the panel. I’d recently completed the Turps Correspondence Course (great btw) & the prize felt like a supportive opportunity for emerging artists. I wanted to keep momentum up, plus I knew & respected a lot of the artists that were shortlisted before.

You get accustomed to rejection, so [being shortlisted] was a major confidence boost. I’d been developing my work quietly, completing an artist residency 6 months prior. Being recognised when you put yourself out there feels really good.

Exhibiting at London Art Fair was an exciting surprise as it was something new for Ingram Prize finalists. I was reunited with old friend & fellow finalist, Hester Finch, for a duo presentation. It means a lot to show my work in person rather than online, as there is so much you lose digitally. You never know who might see the work and connect to it. Jo [Baring], Hester & I held a talk in the VIP lounge at the Fair & it started three new relationships - all of which are important to me still.

I was introduced to three curators, all of whom visited my studio after the Fair. I was put forward for a LAF prize the next year in collaboration with Visit Tampa Bay, which I won. I got to fly to Tampa Bay to experience the history & culture, & paint a 9m x 3m installation; I’d never painted a mural or anything that size! I find unexpected challenges inspiring & stimulating for my practice. The Ingram Prize organised events for those shortlisted; we had a whole day of talks to help our careers, including talks by Julie Lomax from a-n & art critic, Tabish Khan.

I’m coming to the end of my MA at the RCA, which I’ve loved. For years I’d been craving that sort of environment; I wanted to be around other artists & challenge my ideas on a deeper level. My work has developed & I’m embracing the uncertainty that is key to my practice. Being shortlisted for the Ingram Prize almost certainly gave me more confidence to apply to the RCA.

Don’t overthink it. Apply!

Last week, we said goodbye at RCA Studios, and it’s hard to believe that our course has already come to an end. What an incredible journey it has been; filled with unforgettable experiences, challenges and growth.

I’m so grateful to have shared this experience with such brilliant tutors and technicians, but most of all, with such a wonderful cohort. What started as a group of classmates has become a community of truly special people and, I hope, friends for life.

Feeling incredibly grateful for everything we’ve shared, proud of how far we’ve come, and excited for what lies ahead. Here’s to the memories, the lessons, the friendships, and to the next chapter. ❤️

And that’s a wrap! RCA, it’s been a BLAST! Thank you for all the people I met during this past year, who inspired me, challenged me and made this year so special x

As one of the major art world melting pots, the talent that comes out of the schools in London each year is always incredibly exciting. Whether it is the @royalcollegeofart, @sladeschool, @ucl or @goldsmithscca, to name but a few, the talent always astounds. Where it gets interesting is who shines above the rest. In what is a hyper competitive environment, it has never been so difficult.

One of my favourite galleries in London @lbfcontemporary took on the responsibility of selecting 16 of the artists and giving them a chance to shine in central Fitzrovia. ‘London Writes Itself’ champions artists from the @rca_painting and @sladeschool. Artists listed below:

Maria Andrievskaya (@Maria.andrievskaya)
Sunkyung Baek (@sunkyung.__)
Ksenia Dermenzhi (@kseniadermenzhi)
Neequaye Dreph Dsane (@dreph_)
David Hanes (@davidhanes.info)
Rose Electra Harris (@roseelectraharris)
Dora Lam (@dorathedrawer)
Ruowei Liu (@yosoyroway_)
William Lowry (@williamlowry.art)
Anna Lugovska (@lugovska_anna)
Ruarí Milne (@ruarimilne_____)
Rhiannon Salisbury (@rhiannonrs)
Victor Šcheibler (@vsch23)
Jiatong Yuan (@2819yjt)
Ajea Zahid (@zahidajea)

My takeaway from this particular selection? The future of Contemporary British art is in safe hands…

Have fun exploring the next generation of artists making a name for themselves.
