Artist talk with Janet Jarmen
In conversation with Sarah Leen

Tuesday, October 27
Leica Gallery Boston
Doors open and light refreshments: 6:00 pm
Program begins: 6:30 pm
74 Arlington Street, Boston

Janet Jarman’s "Birth Wars" is both a film and book about the pursuit of dignified childbirth with quality care. Through her lens, Jarman brings us closer to a problem that faces women in many countries around the world.

Jarman’s story unfolds in Guatemala and Mexico where Indigenous communities traditionally rely on midwives for childbirth but where medical authorities and practitioners favor hospital births, leading to an abnormally high number of caesarean sections, unnecessary procedures, and feelings of disrespect and abuse. It explores the clash between a woman-centered midwifery model based on ancestral knowledge and the contrasting institutional birth practices of today.

Great stories can change the way we see the world. And sometimes, the person who helps you make that story can change the trajectory of your entire career.

Sarah Leen (@roseleen) is one of those people.

A photographer, editor, mentor, and one of the most respected figures in visual storytelling, Sarah spent more than two decades at National Geographic (@natgeo), including serving as Director of Photography. She has spent her career recognizing powerful stories, nurturing extraordinary photographers, and helping important work find its way into the world. Sarah knows what it takes to take a good idea and make it matter.

Through the @Vital.Impacts Mentorship Program, Sarah asks the tough questions that push you further, opens doors to new possibilities, and helps transform a powerful idea into work that can reach people and create change.

At @Vital.Impacts, we believe the future of storytelling depends on creating those connections and giving talented people the opportunity to learn from those who have helped shape the field.

Our next Fellowship cohort is now accepting applications.

If you have a story you believe needs to be in the world, this could be the opportunity to take it further.

Apply through the link in bio.

RESISTANCE exhibition at House of Lucie Los Angeles until November 6th, 2026!

Curated by Sarah Leen, RESISTANCE brings together images from four separate but thematically intertwined urgent issues: the American experience with ICE and migration enforcement, the Iranian uprising, the war in Ukraine, and the ongoing Palestinian struggle for freedom and self-determination. Through photography and visual storytelling, the exhibition examines acts of defiance, survival, and resilience in the face of overwhelmingly oppressive realities. The works presented here reflect the enduring human spirit and the ways individuals and communities continue to resist systems of control while fighting to preserve their dignity and hope.

After a year of work, we are ready to share Journalism Is Not a Crime, the 2026 FotoEvidence Book Award publication.

This 360-page book brings together the photographs, testimonies and social media posts of 73 Palestinian journalists and photojournalists who documented the war in Gaza from 2023-2025, reporting what they witnessed while living through the war themselves. Some of the journalists whose work appears in these pages were killed while reporting.

Journalism Is Not a Crime was created to preserve this record and the voices of those who made it.

With an introduction by Palestinian journalist @wael_eldahdouh Wael Al-Dahdouh and a cover art, created exclusively for this publication by Belal Khaled @belalkh .
Photo editor: @roseleen , research and curation @aruallan, @meliketascioglu

Family and friends, including Al Jazeera reporter, Wael Al Dahdouh (2nd right), bid farewell to the bodies of journalists Hamza al-Dahdouh and Mustafa Thuraya in Rafah, Gaza.

💥⛏️📓

We’re delighted to share that the photobook EL PRECIO DE LA TIERRA (The Price of the Land) by ALESSANDRO CINQUE, published by RAYA EDITORIAL, photo editing by SARAH LEE, graphic design and art direction by SANTIAGO ESCOBAR-JARAMILLO, has been selected as a finalist for the STGOFOTO International Award 2026, organized by @stgofotoferia @flachgaleria @ccplm.

EL PRECIO DE LA TIERRA (The Price of the Land) is a long-term documentary project that explores the conflict between large-scale mining and Indigenous communities across Andean territories in five South American countries. While mining has driven economic growth, the project reveals its profound environmental consequences, the transformation of local ways of life, the deterioration of public health, the depletion of water sources, and the socio-environmental conflicts that threaten the survival of these communities.

We are honored to be part of such an outstanding selection, alongside an incredible group of authors and exceptional photobooks.

Just spent a week in Maine with an inspiring group of women learning photo editing! The Female Perspectives on Visual Storytelling workshop is led by the Divas of Photo Editing and former Directors at National Geographic, Sarah Leen @roseleen and Kathy Moran @kfmoran, along with the gentle force of Jennifer Fisher @jennifernataliefish and we were lucky to have Lynn Johnson @ljohnphoto as our very special guest. So much wisdom combined with an invaluable passion for storytelling. I feel privileged to have shared this experience with 8 other photographers from diverse backgrounds in our endless pursuit of growth.
