The recent edition of Zeke: The Magazine of Global Documentary features the work of 18 documentary photographers who capture different perspectives of the complexity, pain and beauty of life in America today. It’s such an honor to have my photos of pro-choice protests featured.

It felt important to go out to the Supreme Court the day RoeVWade was overturned to capture the resistance and protestors who showed up to support the right to have an abortion. I’m grateful to @savplatypus, @peachyofficial33 and the thousands of others who were there that day - your activism and energy made these photos and left me feeling less alone. We are the majority and we must continue to resist this BS extremest court. Keep donating to abortion funds and showing up.

I’ll be joining other featured photographers to talk about my work on December 7 at 3 pm. Link in my bio to join this free discussion. I encourage you to check out the work of all the incredible photographers featured in the magazine. DM me for a link. The last photo shows the cover photo by the talented photographer and teacher @photobracken. @zeke_magazine @socialdocumentarynet

Karina Bernlow and her eldest son Storm push the two youngest children along the road near their home on the remote Arctic island of Svalbard. Here, polar bears outnumber people and rifles must be carried everywhere. Attacks are rare, but they do happen.

Once the children fall asleep they are left in their strollers on the front porch (“The Arctic air is great for their young lungs,” says Karina, “it makes them strong. You have to be strong here.”).

Many rural communities lack access to oral health providers due to geographic isolation and workforce maldistribution.
Oral health literacy – A 2009 study found that health literacy is lower among rural populations.

In terms of oral health, poor health literacy can result in poor oral hygiene and difficulty in navigating the oral health system.

In addition, rural residents with low health literacy are more likely to consume sugar-sweetened beverages and more prone to dental caries, periodontal diseases, tooth loss and oral cancers. Other oral conditions of public health importance are orofacial clefts, noma (severe gangrenous disease starting in the mouth mostly affecting children) and oro-dental trauma.

The WHO Global Oral Health Status Report (2022) estimated that oral diseases affect close to 3.5 billion people worldwide, with 3 out of 4 people affected living in middle-income countries. Globally, an estimated 2 billion people suffer from caries of permanent teeth and 514 million children suffer from caries of primary teeth.

I’m honored to have been selected as one of the University of Edinburgh’s “Climate 75”, a list of its most “influential alumni who are making significant contribution to climate science and justice”.

Joining me are an incredible cadre of scientists, journalists, researchers, artists, educators, entrepreneurs and everything in-between. They remind us that there is no single solution to the climate crisis… but, rather, millions of ways to help make the transition towards a more sustainable, post-carbon world. There is space within this coalition for everyone, and we have to broaden the circle of inclusion if we want to build and inspire durable change.

I want to take this opportunity thank to all of the incredible partners, mentors, friends, communities, and allies who I have worked alongside over the past decade. As a journalist my work is focused on elevating the visions, voices, and solutions that they are bringing forth to the world. If I have done anything right… it lies in picking good friends. They are my inspiration and my heroes. This award is for them.

Finally, thanks to the University of Edinburgh @eduni_dc_alumni @edinburghuniversity for an education and an experience that has changed the course of my life. And thank you to Rotary International, who graciously gave me the scholarship that got me there. Onward!

The Taxidermist / Jim McCrobie

“The hardest part is the eyeballs. When I personally look at a deer, the very first thing I look at is the eyes. Because like I said, them eyes, in a way, kind of bring that deer back to life. I mean, some guys don’t care. They don’t look at nothing but the horns. But I’m different because I’m a taxidermist. I can tell if the guy knows what he’s doing or not. So, the eyes is the first thing that’s really important to me. The nose second. Then the ears. My father taught me to take pride in what I do. I want to help make your hunt last a lifetime. So, that’s what I try to do.”

From #themountaintraditionsproject - stories of Appalachian traditions in our rapidly changing world. The project has been a ten-year long odyssey to document Appalachian traditions as they change, and new ones emerge. The project was created with a number of fantastic organizations throughout the Allegheny Mountains region, where I grew up. The project was recently published as a feature article in @bittersoutherner corresponding with a large gallery show of work in the @alleganyartscouncil printed by @digitalsilverimaging
