Roseville High School students got a hands-on look at careers in Building & Construction! The Placer Workforce Development Foundation, the Roseville Area Chamber of Commerce's 501c3, brought students to the Roseville Venture Lab to try on VR headsets loaded with software that lets them experience the industry firsthand. They stepped into the shoes of broadband construction workers, carpenters, HVAC technicians, and more to explore their options after graduation. Afterward, students sat down with local business leaders Jarod Heath of Greyscale Architecture, Inc, Noah Duncan of Lawson SSPGroup, and Isaac Mendoza of IMC Builders for a Q&A about the day-to-day work at their businesses and advice on what comes next. Then students were able to hear from Manuel Fierro, an Enrollment Specialist with Sierra College, to go over next steps after graduation. Special Thank You to our Sponsor, Golden Sierra Job Training Agency. Watch as these students explore what's possible! by @rosevillechamber

Here are the latest advocacy updates on emerging California legislation related to technology and AI:

AB 1883 Workplace Surveillance Tools
Taking effect on January 1, 2027, this bill will prohibit AI emotion recognition, prohibit neutral data collection, distinguish permitted safety uses, and observe applicable local protections. Limited exemptions apply for qualifying aircraft development and national security, military, space, or defense operations where surveillance is reasonably necessary to comply with specified federal requirements. Violations may result in up to a $500 penalty per violation.

SB 951 Employment: Technological Displacement Notice
This bill requires 60 days’ advance notice to employees of companies experiencing mass layoffs, the Employment Development Department (EDD), the local workforce development board, and relevant local elected officials before a coveted mass layoff, relocation, and/or termination. Mass layoffs are classified as a layoff within a 30-day period of 50 or more employees. Relocation is classified as removal of substantial or all the industrial or commercial operations in a covered establishment to a different location 100 miles or more away. It also requires disclosure of AI-related displacement, include required worker resources, and coordinate transition services when applicable. This will go into effect January 1, 2027.

AB 1609 Customer Service Chatbots
Large private businesses with more than $500 million in annual gross revenue nationally that provide goods or services to California customers must disclose AI chatbots, provide access to human agents, respond to human-agent requests promptly, limit hold and wait times, and clearly display phone support information. Enforcement will include public prosecutors, civil penalties of up to $5,000 for initial violations, and $10,000 for following violations. Certain exceptions are exempt. This will also go into effect January 1, 2027. by @rosevillechamber
