What do you get if you take some nicely shaped leftover scraps of pallet wood, and some unwanted wooden curtain rings, that would have otherwise gone in the bin?

I loved the shape of these pieces of wood. They were too good to throw away. What do you think? Useful?

Made from waste:

My friend asked me to make her a small pallet wood shelf. Most people would have just made one but of course I decided to make two! This is second one, that is now for sale. It was made using just one scrap wood pallet. It was a lovely brown colour and I was really pleased with how it turned out.

What would you keep on yours?

Thank you to @AbingdonCarbonCutters for lending me their apple pressing equipment.

Although I haven't any apples, me and my neighbours have a large grape vine.

We've been manually making grape juice for a few years now, on a very small scale, with a potato masher(!) but this kit has made it very easy to produce a lot. And the pasteuriser allows us to keep it for a while, although it's likely to get drunk quite quickly!

It's a great way of using grapes and the juice tastes amazing this year.

If you are local to Abingdon you can hire the kit too.

Made from waste:

My new friend, Lorito, who is an African Grey parrot, recently came to stay. He came with his own belongings and his own travel perch. His own perch was very old though and coming apart. How lucky for him that he came to stay with someone who makes things out of scrap wood!

So, I decided to make him a new perch out of scrap wood.

He seemed happy with it.

What do you do with an old bicycle wheel that is a little dented, a little rusty and not much use on a bike any more?

Well, I decided to turn one that I had into a light. With the help of some black metal paint, that can, supposedly, be used on rusty metal, a chunky piece of scrap wood (which is a lovely colour) and a second hand light cable.

Made from waste:

A happy customer has placed her new pallet wood shelf outside to show off her pots. I varnished it with yacht varnish to protect it from bad weather, so it's appropriate for outside.

Using only 1 scrap wood pallet, I was really pleased with how it turned out and it looks like it's being well used already.

What would you keep on yours?

All of my electric power tools are run using solar power. Those that need charging get charged in the middle of the day, when the sun's shining.

I've had them for about 3 years now and am really happy with them, I can highly recommend them.

They've been working overtime this Summer. They do still work on cloudy days but generate less. They will continue to work during the Winter, although they generate less when the days are shorter.

Wine corks are waste products that often just get tossed away without a second thought. But they do have lots of uses.

Did you know that if you boil them in water you can easily cut them? What are you going to do the with yours?

Every pallet project starts with dismantling a pallet.

Sometimes taking a pallet apart can be easy, sometimes more difficult but still quite a bit of effort. This one was relatively easy.

Made from waste:
I've made this handmade, scrap wood, phone or tablet holder, which can be held vertically or horizontally. Not a bad use for small bits of scrap wood otherwise destined for the bin.

What do you get if you take a few corks, saved from the rubbish bin, and an old picture frame without any glass, bought from a charity shop - a cork notice board, that's what.

I recently got a secondhand belt sander from @trashnothing A lovely lady, whose husband had recently passed away, was looking for a new home for his well used tools.

I've never owned a belt sander before and it's a real game changer. Really easy to use and quieter than my other sander, so the neighbours will be pleased!

It's always good to buy secondhand if possible. Ultimately it's cheaper (or free!), it reduces the amount of resources needed to make, package and transport new things, reducing what ends up in a landfill, and encourages a more circular economy.
