A lil update on my music world -

🟢 @the_auxlry has been writing, rehearsing and recording this summer and will be announcing a late September gig soon. Really looking forward to playing out again! New songs and arrangements are sure to be in the mix.

🧟 🌊 @creeperwave (my new project!) recently booked an opening slot for my friend Justin @ravarymusic @thecavenc Aug 19th. Please come out if you’re in the area! Stereo amp setup is sounding pretty tasty at creeperwave HQ (2nd+3rd pics.. send drummer recs , please!). In addition to having the holographic stickers available, I’ll have a very limited run of 12 hand numbered and hand stamped block print show posters! Super proud of these little gems as the process of making them was ultra satisfying.

🎸 and finally, after a lot of deliberation, I started making guitars I’ve always wanted but never felt were worth the money the major brands ask. This has not been a fast or easy process and I am relying on help from a few folks who know a lot more about completing these project than I do, but, I’m putting in the time, learning as I go, and hopefully will have a Les Paul Jr double cut and a 67 Flying V soon enough. Quality of my first builds is TBD. 😂 having access to a high quality CNC machine doesn’t hurt!

Shocked and very sad to hear that sweet Ray Ray, Raymond Finn, left us last week. This photo was taken of us the 2nd time Bruce Springsteen visited SoundPure in Durham back in 2014. I’m so glad Ray was at the shop that day. Such a great memory. Last time I spend time with Ray was mid-2020 when he took a round of photos of a car I was about to sell. He was a longtime car photographer and I was lucky to get some time with him to experience that part of his world outside of music. I’ll always remember him ending up super sweaty and shirtless about half way through any show he played. Hilarious and badass. He rocked hard. One of the nicest and coolest people I ever met. He will be greatly missed. by @ross_gruet

On the last weekend of 2024, I had an afternoon gig in Carrboro with The Auxiliary that Bronwyn and Asa were able to attend. I was nervous because I was booked to open the show with a solo acoustic set. I hadn’t performed solo in years but I was up for the challenge. It went well enough, and even though it was the 2nd time Asa had seen me play out, it was the first time he saw me play my own music in public. It felt surreal. Asa stood right up front for a good amount of my set. It was incredibly difficult to look at him, not because he was distracting but because he was so attentive and proud. It was just too cute. I had to look right to the back of the room just so I didn’t tear up. Pretty great memory having my wife and lil guy at that show. And even though they had to head out before the full band played, I think we played our best set in the couple of years we’ve been a band. I’m playing three festivals with two bands @rettbarrish and @the_auxlry with a total of four sets. We’ve been practicing. We’ve been working on new songs and adding some OOMPH to the staples. We’re ready to rock. 🤘😝🤘

I truly hope to see you at one or more of these!

🎶 🎥 • I’ve played in a bunch o’ bands over the years. It wasn’t until 2023 that I was able to fulfill a dream of being in a professional music video production. Two, actually! @the_auxlry is a band that’s so much more than the music. Don’t get me wrong, the music is what attracted me to be a part of Russell’s band, for sure. But it’s the thoughtful visuals that really make this a well-rounded and interesting experience that I feel everyone can enjoy. Come up with your own idea of who we are. Sit in the honeymoon phase of your relationship with what we’re sharing. As the butterflies dissipate, can you feel the warmth?

Last week’s show playing in Brett Harris’ band opening for @baseballproject @catscradlenc was monumental, to say the least. Thankful, grateful, and lucky to be in Brett’s band. His songwriting, voice, and ability to attract the nicest and most passionate musicians is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. Brett has put in the time. He’s been through it all. The new tunes are super fun and the occasional cover is always a unique challenge and introduces me to bands that I can’t believe I missed! You could say I’m excited for what’s next with this band, and you wouldn’t be wrong. Here’s to my good friend who deserves all the praise! 👏👏👏 Thanks for having me along for the ride. (There are more photos but the photographer spent most of his time on my side of the stage, so.. 😂 glad my parents get to see these. They’ve always been supportive 🫶 and hopefully the other guys will post the rest of Ricky’s killer shots!) KEEP ROCKIN’ 🤘😝🤘

Conducting a quick n’ dirty tone test. All of these guitars have been on the road, but one hasn’t been used for live performances in over 10 years! Highly considering bringing it back. I’m playing through a Victoria 2x10 combo with Strymon Flint reverb on and Flickinger Ampeater (double Angry Sparrow) on light gain. All guitars are on the bridge pickup. This could be a fun change of guitar for both bands I’m currently playing with but starting with a Brett Harris gig on the Cradle main stage in a few nights. Happy first Mother’s Day @bronwyn.gruet ! Asa and I are lucky guys. You’re an amazing Mom and it’s truly incredible that you’re able to do what you do with how little sleep you’ve had this past 10 months. I don’t know how you do it. Thank you @carrborosandlot for capturing this moment so my Mom and Dad can see it! I struggled with every team sport growing up and after quitting all team sports in 7th grade (26 years ago? 😬) I never thought I’d be on a baseball team again, let alone a team of such amazing people who are so positive and encouraging of everyone who wants to be a part of this growing collective. Thank you all for being good people. I will remember this past weekend FOR. EH. VER. (FOR. EH. VER.) ⚾️ 🤓 - ROSS N’ ROLLLLLL!!!

We adhere strictly to that rule, but we just gotta celebrate @r.gruet for walking it off yesterday in the Freight Trains’ game against @thebandits_labf.

Big ups are also in order for @willy.grange, Bill O, and @rettbarrish, who set the table for a rally in the bottom of the 9th before Ross ‘N Roll channeled the power of his jorts and poked a @boochwoozy curve just past the mound to cap off @carrborosandlot’s weekend.

Will we remember this moment forever? Yes we will. Will we root for every other #sandlotrevolution team to enjoy such a heartwarming finish? Yes we will. Will we travel to Los Angeles one day so the Bandits and their @labaseballfederation comrades get the chance to return the favor? Yes, we most definitely will.
