This fabulous little mid century modern chair was on the bench last night - it was in its original clothes, a stitched fluted, cap on cover, stuffed with recycled wool, ginger fibre, sitting on a hessian base with a webbed back and sinuous springs on the base. We’re going to strip it back to frame, maybe reuse the springs if not we’ll Black&White web the back & seat and then rebuild - excited for this one!
Thursday night BYO Upholstery Project sessions - start a little later than Mondays, at 6.30pm offering 12.5hrs of Tuition across a 5 week block. Tuition, tools, sundries, tea/coffee/gingernuts lots of learning, lots of laughter included, you can leave your project on site between sessions & you can start on any date (subject to availability). Beginners & Returners welcome.

Zero waste craft kit incoming - patchwork reversible pots using saved off cuts from years of upholstery squirreling! Just like the stitch & stuff sardine kits and the round zipped pouch kit they will have everything you need inside their letterbox friendly packaging, including instructions to hand stitch the pot (you could of course machine stitch it, but it is harder to post the machines, and the box doesn’t close so well … ahem) hoping to get them done in time for @artistsandmakers on November 27/28 - but if not, who doesn’t love a sardine?

*I just tried to add a CRAFT SCRAPS hashtag but it read with the spacing between the SC which wasn’t quite the message I was going for …

Kick your week off with a few creative hours, using your hands at my regular BYO upholstery project workshop - bookable in 5 week blocks, starting on any Monday (subject to availability) - I provide the tuition, tools, sundries, space, tea/coffee/biscuits. You bring your project, top fabric and pay pro rata for any project specific materials (springs, cocolok, foam) - we chat textiles, pattern, design, sustainability, furniture history - whilst learning new and building on existing skills & techniques, understanding sequencing, considering purpose, talking through choices, comparing where those would differ for another project, we learn at leisure, for pleasure, at the speed & in the style that suits you, matching your needs and your goals. As you might know, perhaps as I bang on about it, in my own work I use recycled, revalued, sustainable and deadstock materials. With the offcuts I make upholstered pinboards. With the offcuts of the offcuts I make zero waste craft kits. Now, thanks to a helpful prod by the lovely (and inordinately talented - go check her out) @weedyform I am saving the thread legs and the scraps of the offcuts for a zero waste pouffe - because there really is no such thing as throwing away.

Get yourself a Billy Bargain - swipe above for the long read - but in short 2 places on Oct 18 Footstool workshop at £187.50 instead of £250 because … well you need to read the slides. One novice, one returner - basic hand tools skills, tricky ‘round the post’ cuts - chats about sustainability, fabric economics, pattern & build sequencing, fabric sourcing, text referencing, the origins of calico & the martindale number - a really joyous day of questions, hard work, curiosity, sharing, supporting and using our hands - I genuinely thought “I’m a pretty lucky bugger doing this for a gig”. Some beautiful pieces coming in and out of the studio for my BYO Upholstery workshop sessions - including the 2 slipper chairs (Slide 1&2) coming in this month, one antique, one vintage … interested to see what similarities and what obstacles they each throw into the ring, how different they will be in original construction and in our approach to reupholstering and of course I’m already slightly twitchy at the inevitable terrible Cinderella puns I’ll be offering up.
