Rowan Mersh is a British artist known for wall based sculptural works that combine a strong physical structure with a soft and organic visual effect. His pieces are built by hand from thousands of individual components, each selected for its shape, texture and sculptural quality. He works with responsibly sourced materials including shell, wood and marble dust, arranging them indense formations that recall feathers, coral, fur and other natural patterns. The result is work that feels both highly detailed and expansive, with a strong sense of movement across the surface. His sculptures are held in collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum, Jerwood and The Crafts Council,and his commissions include projects for Fendi, Veuve Clicquot and the Mercury Music Prize.

For the exhibition, British sculptor @rowan_mersh presented Placuna Valens, a sculpture composed entirely of Capiz shells, once used as natural glass for their soft, translucent glow.

Each shell is placed by hand in a slow, meditative process that follows the material’s own organic logic. Layer by layer, an undulating surface emerges, echoing the rhythm of a woven structure.
The resemblance is not literal but spiritual: a shared devotion to repetition, precision, and quiet attention.
Mersh’s works feel like textiles seen under magnification, macro visions of micro weaves, where light permeates the surface and reveals hidden patterns.

In this new work Rowan Mersh creates a kaleidoscopic sculpture simultaneously playing with light, volume, and optics, emblematic of his ability to transform simple materials into something extraordinary. While best known for his work with shells, this piece is crafted out of thin wooden sticks, extending his control over the natural and organic world. Oscillating between that which is in flux, and an internal logic, the forms are reminiscent of fantastical creatures, or those that live just below us in the sea. ⁠

Presenting new work by British sculptor @rowan_mersh: Pithváva Male Midi is a wall mounted sculpture crafted with responsibly sourced dentalium shells, and is debuting at this year’s edition of @fogfair.⁠

Dentalium shells are distinctive for their long, slender form. Fittingly, their name originates from the Latin word dentis, meaning tooth. Their natural curved shape enables Mersh to craft captivating patterns by thoughtfully combining individual shells. By considering how each piece interacts with the others, he allows the material to guide his creative process.⁠
