DISCO DISPOSITION

Disco Disposition was born in summer 2024 from the minds of DJs Mark Thompson, Rubeans and Filey Selassie. They wanted to put on a night honouring the discotheques of the 1970s and 80s. To create an evening where people of all ages and backgrounds can come, feel accepted, look beautiful and share the experience of dancing to fantastic music together. The DJs play a lot of classic funk, soul and ‘traditional disco’ but also venture into the housier side and try not to hem themselves in too much at all. Look at Larry Levan’s mixes: there was always a curveball at the Garage or Studio 54. If it kept people moving, it was a winner! They've put on a handful of dances since their first outing and there is always a delicious crowd who never fail to bring the moves.

Just a few days to go now until the release of our ‘Joni~Alice’ single on Friday 10th April! If you can’t wait until then, head to our Bandcamp (via the link in our bio) for a preview of the first track.

Soul Jazz Records have recently made the Sand albums available on streaming services. I know I posted a story about this yesterday, but I wanted to follow up with a proper post (including all three album covers in full).

The albums were recorded at Finsbury Park Studios in York between 1999 and 2006. For me, making this strange, dark, powerful, beautiful, and sometimes confusing music with Tim, Hilary, Neil and John will always remain one of the most treasured periods in my creative life.

Tim is sorely missed following the tragic news of his death last year, but it’s good to know that this slice of his incredible catalogue of work can now be heard more widely.

The track accompanying this post – ‘Body In The River’ – sums up the way Sand would combine disparate textures and stylistic elements in unlikely ways which, via some mysterious alchemy, ended up sounding fresh, distinctive and coherent. If you like what you hear, go and check out the rest…

Tim Wright (1969 - 2025) - a tribute by Hilary Jeffery and friends

Tim Wright passed away on 19th April 2025. Tim had a real creative genius and in the studio he was a sound alchemist. He worked mostly at studios in York, the primary one being Finsbury Park Studio, located at Finsbury Street, next to a park. The early '90s electronic music culture was a lot more than four on the floor kicks for the head, and Tim's early project Germ exemplified the depth and range of what could be done with relatively simple means. Tim was always open to collaborating with others. One example was an attempt to play jazz which transformed into the group Sand. In parallel to this and many other projects, Tim developed his solo work and composed some of the best rave influenced anthems under the name Tube Jerk. Other projects include Pin, Asphere, Moondog, Fat Coda, Speed Baby, Viewer and Stereoscope. Computer based composition was always central to his work and his PhD work for the University of York featured algorithmic compositions for virtual string ensembles. In his last years Tim taught at the University and was a valued member of staff, always encouraging students to find their voice and express their creativity, as he had done with all his colleagues through his life. Tim Wright's music is released on many labels including GPR, Soul Jazz Records, Melt Records, Sativae, PIAS, Tresor, The Nothing Special and Novamute. This programme is a celebration of his amazing music, put together by Hilary Jeffery and friends. Thank you Tim! I've got a gig tomorrow night as one half of Hinterland, the new acoustic duo with @adamc_73. Expect piano/guitar and bass playing some originals and some Hinterland interpretations, drawing on jazz, Brazilian, latin and more.

The gig is part of @bigideasbythesea festival and will also feature poetry by @charlotteoliverpoet, @rowenasommerville, plus more music by The Marigolds.
