Extraction, A Dialogue of Extremes, Diane Burko’s solo exhibition at Rowan University Museum of Contemporary Art, pairs two bodies of work: Arctic paintings based on NSF-funded climate research and works on Amazon mining and deforestation. The show was created as the research grant’s community engagement component. In this interview, curator Mary Salvante discusses how the exhibition came together, the tension between the two series, how the work uses beauty to address climate change, and what the museum hopes visitors take away.

Can curiosity change the course of an artist's entire career? 🔬🎨

For Diane Burko, the answer began with a question about a landscape she had painted decades earlier.

That curiosity eventually led to scientific collaborations, environmental research and artwork that challenges us to consider our relationship with the planet.

Now, her work is on view at Rowan University Museum of Contemporary Art.

🌎 What unexpected connection between art and another subject would you love to explore?

Ever since I became a climate activist/artist, I’ve made it a policy to request that the institution I’m showing with guarantee some kind of public programming in connection with the exhibition and the issues of climate change.

Over the years, this request has resulted in panel discussions with scientists, guest lectures, PowerPoint presentations, and conversations between myself and the researcher. In a university gallery, my goal has been to include not only art and geology students but to make it as inclusive as possible. I hope to develop awareness as my way of contributing to dialogue around the environment in this crucial moment.

That goal was achieved last week at the Rowan Museum of Contemporary Art. I spoke at a panel “Intersection of At and Science: Communication and Collaboration” that was so packed, we had only standing room left. It was gratifying to converse with the moderator Dr. Cynthia and Dr. Lauren Kipp about the research on the ARION Project along with science communicator Virginia Schutte.

I am delighted to share that my review of Jazlyne Sabree’s @jazlynesabree stellar and thought provoking solo exhibition, “The Spectrum of Resilience,” presented at the Rowan University Contemporary Museum of Art @rowanuartmuseum in Glassboro, NJ is now published online in Wordgathering’s Summer 2026 issue. The exhibition was curated by Mary Salvante. @mary.salvante Link to the full review in bio.

Wordgathering began as a quarterly publication in 2007, and the Summer 2026 issue therefore denotes the beginning of the journal’s 20th year of publication.

If you missed the exhibition, you can check out the beautiful exhibition catalogue to see all the work that includes an essay by Alexandra Jane. by @rowanuartmuseum

I’m still feeling the glow from this week’s opening at Rowan’s Museum of Contemporary Art. I was truly surprised with how many people came out. So many friends I hadn’t seen in a while from Philly, Bucks County and Princeton including: Matt Charette from Woods Hole as well as lots from Rowan University’s community. There was standing room only for the earlier panel.

Thank you all for showing up— it truly matters. Please forgive me for not listing all your names. I would like to express particular gratitude to Mary Salvante who made it all possible and Kristin Qualls for the beautifully designed catalog! Also, I want to give a shoutout to my former Studio Managers: Catia Colagioia and Ella Konefal who helped me develop this body of work - and the Cristin Tierney Gallery for their support. Here are some shots from the opening and I promise to share another on the panel:  “Intersections of Art and Science: Communication and Collaboration.”

I’m really looking forward to the opening of Extraction: A Dialogue of Extremes tomorrow at @rowanuartmuseum. This is my first time showing sculptural hollow pieces as well as a number of new multimedia works. These works are focused on the ARION project— a 5 year NSF sponsored study conducted by scientists from Rowan and Woods Hole.

The story behind this body of work is quite serendipitous. At first, I envisioned placing shards of safety glass inside the wooden hollows. When I asked my friend Steve about this idea, he invited me to his warehouse where he proceeded to crush an 8’ x 4’ piece of glass before pouring all of the shards into large buckets for me to take. I originally wanted to fill one hollow, but noticed the glass looked so much like ice. That inspired me to create another series for this show. I placed the shards onto photos of earlier paintings of coral reefs. Then added silkscreen prints of maps indicating the location of the expedition: the Northern Siberian Sea, as well as the transpolar drift.

Join artist Diane Burko and scientists Dr. Lauren Kipp and Dr. Virginia Shutte for Intersections of Art and Science: Communication and Collaboration on Sept. 16 at 4 p.m. at the Rowan University Museum of Contemporary Art. RSVP: go.rowan.edu/BurkoRSVP

Moderated by Dr. Cynthia Veloric, the panel will explore how interdisciplinary collaboration can transform scientific research into compelling public conversations.

A reception for Burko’s exhibition, Extraction, A Dialogue of Extremes, follows from 5–7 p.m. Free and open to the public. Let us know you’re coming at go.rowan.edu/BurkoRSVP

Diane Burko is an American artist based in Philadelphia whose practice is situated at the intersection of art, science and the environment. Seeking to visually
emulsify interconnected subjects– extraction, deforestation, environmental justice,
indigenous genocide, ecological degradation– Burko’s large-scale mixed media paintings make the connection between them impossible to ignore. She has exhibited extensively nationally and internationally, and her work is in many public collections. She is represented by the Cristin Tierney Gallery in NYC.

Dr. Lauren Kipp is an oceanographer and Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental Science at Rowan University. She uses naturally occurring
radioactive isotopes to study the chemistry of the ocean, with a particular interest in how the oceans influence, and are influenced by, climate change. Much of her
research takes place in the Arctic, where she has spent time collecting samples from the coast of Northern Canada all the way to the North Pole.

Dr. Virginia Schutte is a science media creator and strategist, bringing people together in ways that matter. Starting her career as a scientist, she transitioned
to a career in science communication. She has designed and produced digital campaigns and museum exhibits, consulted on communications strategies,
trained scientists to meet communications goals, and studied how higher education can better support scholars. Her latest work includes building and
running organizations.

Panel moderator Dr. Cynthia H. Veloric is an art historian, independent curator, adjunct professor and envi by @rowanuartmuseum
