Gorillas on wheels.

In 2018, Philadelphia artist Eileen Neff spent seven months photographing the restoration of two 1930s dioramas at the Academy of Natural Sciences. Arsenic in the taxidermy meant the crew worked in hazmat suits, and her camera caught them wheeling gorillas and takins in and out of their dioramas. "It was strangely emotional," Neff said.

Her archival research led her to Charles Willson Peale, the painter whose Philadelphia museum displayed taxidermied animals and whose portrait of Benjamin Franklin hangs in our current exhibition, At Liberty.

With the Academy of Natural Sciences museum now closed, Dr. Gwendolyn DuBois Shaw, Inaugural Faculty Director of the Arthur Ross Gallery, “would like to reflect upon the legacy of these institutions and the ways they were so key to the period of the early republic, and to the creation of a national culture around natural history and display and portraiture and museum practice, They were central to the cultural life of Philadelphia.”
