🌊 Going down swinging. That’s beach sprint racing.

For New Zealand’s Matt Dunham, the conditions at the 2026 World Rowing Beach Sprint Finals in Qingdao, China, made for a brutal day on the water.

After being hit by a big set of waves in his first Men's Solo time trial, Matt went back out for a second shot at securing a knockout-round spot. More waves followed, but he kept fighting to the finish.

“I hit five waves on the first one and about seven on the second time trial, so I was cooked,” Matt said. “I knew it was game over, but I just went down swinging, just to give it the best race I could.”

It’s that mindset that beach sprint racing demands - grit, resilience and the courage to give it everything, whatever the conditions throw at you.

As Matt puts it: “You’ve just got to send it, and fingers crossed it’s on your side.” 💪

How do you prepare for the unexpected in an Olympic final?

At the London 2012 Olympic Games, Joseph Sullivan and Nathan Cohen produced one of rowing’s greatest finishing sprints to claim gold for New Zealand in the Men’s Double Scull.

But that extraordinary final 500 metres was no accident.

Joseph reveals how rehearsing seemingly impossible race scenarios became part of their daily training, building the composure and confidence to respond when it mattered most.

How important is mental preparation when it comes to racing under pressure?

Five years on from Olympic gold, the Kiwi Eight are back together 🚣

Members of New Zealand’s gold-medal-winning men’s eight reunited in Boston for the 2026 Head of the Charles Regatta, five years after their unforgettable Tokyo triumph.

In this TVNZ feature, the crew reflect on how things have changed since their Olympic days. The focus this time? Less business, more pleasure, and enjoying the chance to race together again.

They finished 31st in the Men’s Championship Eights, but the reunion was about more than the result. It was a chance to reconnect, share a few stories and enjoy being back in the boat together.

A bit of my story for Mental Health Awareness Week 🩵

I don’t want to just share the highlights on social media, because real life has its ups and downs. These topics aren’t always easy to talk about, but starting these conversations is so important and something I’m really passionate about.

I’ve learnt the importance of speaking up, asking for help, and advocating for myself and others. It’s not always perfect, and that’s okay — that’s life!

Big love to everyone featured in these pics and everyone else who’s been a part of it all 💞 #mentalhealthawareness #mhawnz #mentalhealth by @rowingnz

ZARA’S MAADI LEGACY JOURNEY

If you could sum up your rowing journey in just one word, what would it be? 💭

Meet Zara Blackie from St Cuthbert’s College, winner of the 2026 Maadi Legacy single. 🚣‍♀️

We caught up with Zara to talk about that winning moment, Kirsty’s words before the race, the people who have shaped her journey, and what comes next.

What it means to leave a legacy through a boat that will carry future rowers at her school. Her name will be part of their journey, too. 💚

Congratulations, Zara. It’s a pleasure to help celebrate your achievement and share your story.
