How do you prepare for the unexpected in an Olympic final?

At the London 2012 Olympic Games, Joseph Sullivan and Nathan Cohen produced one of rowing’s greatest finishing sprints to claim gold for New Zealand in the Men’s Double Scull.

But that extraordinary final 500 metres was no accident.

Joseph reveals how rehearsing seemingly impossible race scenarios became part of their daily training, building the composure and confidence to respond when it mattered most.

How important is mental preparation when it comes to racing under pressure?

A bit of my story for Mental Health Awareness Week 🩵

I don’t want to just share the highlights on social media, because real life has its ups and downs. These topics aren’t always easy to talk about, but starting these conversations is so important and something I’m really passionate about.

I’ve learnt the importance of speaking up, asking for help, and advocating for myself and others. It’s not always perfect, and that’s okay — that’s life!

Big love to everyone featured in these pics and everyone else who’s been a part of it all 💞 #mentalhealthawareness #mhawnz #mentalhealth

He'll be flying the @waikatorowingclub colours in his attempt to win a 3-peat of victories, which was last achieved 33 years ago.
