A busy afternoon was had potting on my seedlings that I’ve been growing alongside @lookinsidemygarden as part of the autumn grow along
A few were outgrowing their pots (especially the cerinthe!) so needed more space to thrive. I’ve had success with the seedsnall method before so decided to pop the larger ones in them so the stems could be buried a bit deeper. It’s also a great space saver for gardeners like myself who are limited on space and want to grow anything and everything! 😂🌱

I’ve been wanting to add water to the garden for a long time, so when I saw this Belfast sink on FB marketplace I saw my chance!
Hopefully more wildlife will be introduced to the garden and I can’t wait to see who visits!! 🥰

Just some of my favourites from the summer that have performed well in the garden and have given endless blooms for so many weeks 🌺🌸
What plants have done well in your gardens this summer? I’d love to extend my list for next year!

🍂 A little autumn tidy-up in the garden! 🌿

I’ve been busy re-jigging the borders, moving a few things around and giving everything a good tidy in preparation for winter.

One important job has been clearing away fallen leaves and debris from around the base of plants. Although leaves are great for wildlife and can be left in other areas of the garden, allowing them to build up around plants can trap moisture, encourage fungal diseases and create the perfect hiding place for pests. A little clear-up helps keep plants healthy through the colder months. 🍃 I’ve moved a couple of plants around to help fill some gaps and create a bit more privacy from the fence between ourselves and next door.

There are still a couple of jobs on the list before the garden is tucked up for winter:
🌷 Planting tulip bulbs once the temperatures are cold enough.
🌱 Mulching the borders to protect and improve the soil, retain moisture and give everything a little extra protection over winter.

It’s all about getting the garden ready for the colder months while thinking ahead to how it will look next spring and summer.

There’s always something to do in the garden, isn’t there? 🤎

🍂 A little autumn update from my zippy greenhouse 🌱

With limited space to grow everything I’d love to, I’m trying to be a little more selective and stick to the hardy, easy-going seedlings that I know will reward me with plenty of colour in the garden next year 🌸🌼

There’s still a bit of potting on to do, but with those early dark evenings creeping in, that job is going to have to wait until the weekend!

The echinaceas are having a little change of plan, too. They were planted out in the garden this summer but started looking a bit sorry for themselves, so I’ve potted them up and tucked them away in the greenhouse in the hope of giving them a little extra protection over winter 🤞🏼

I’m also wondering whether they might be happier in pots of gritty compost rather than in the borders, so that’s something I might experiment with next year.

Just a little autumn pottering, planning and hoping for a greenhouse full of happy plants and a garden bursting with colour next summer. 🌱💚

A few pics of the garden after a weekend of having a big tidy up! I’ve cleared and tidied pots, getting rid of anything past its best. Where the pots had sat all summer had become a real mess and needed more of a sweep as it was sooo slippy!!
Once everything was clean and disinfected I could have a good shuffle about and changed up the display a bit to showcase the dahlias for as long as possible. I don’t think we have very long left of them as we were very close to a frost last night!

A Skimmia japonica is a beautiful evergreen shrub for this time of year and through the winter with its deep red buds, so it was a shame that the Carex grass had doubled in size and was swamping it!
It was an added bonus to get that extra Carex by dividing it and what was once just one pot is now three!! 🙌🏼
I’ll be able to enjoy the white flowers of the Skimmia in the spring now and the grasses have now added more texture throughout the garden 😊

The beauty of my husband and I having our own garden maintenance business is that I have all the tools and machinery required to make the job of doing our own lawn quick and easy! 👌🏼
Will this be the Final cut of the year though? 🤔 I hope so as our lawn becomes very wet and boggy over the winter months, which means definitely no mowing then!!

I love the fading colours of hydrangeas at this time of year and I can’t wait to either display them in a vase or make a wreath from them once they’ve dried.
There are two ways to dry hydrangeas and I’ve chosen to try the vase method but you could easily tie a few stems together with twine and hang them upside down in a cool, dry and well ventilated room.
Have you tried drying hydrangeas? If so, what method has worked best for you?

October has not been the best start for me as I’ve been feeling unwell so the garden has taken a bit of a backseat. A few little jobs have been ticked off my list though ✅ During my wanderings around the garden I’ve found myself adding even more to the list!! 🫣
I’m desperate to paint the fence at the back but that will definitely have to wait until I’m in the mood for it (not my favourite job) If anyone could suggest what colour to use I’d be grateful of the advice 🙏

A beautiful day was spent wandering the grounds of @arleyhallandgardens with glorious sunshine and that unmistakeable feeling that the season is changing 🍂☀️
Still so much beauty to be seen and it was the perfect setting for an autumn stroll ✨
The highlight for me was the herbaceous border filled with all different varieties and colours of aster 😍 lots of inspiration to take home 🌸🌺 They also have their own @arleyhallnursery which was well worth a visit! I may have picked up a few goodies!! 😍💜

It’s nowhere near finished but I’ve made a good start on my new island bed, making a miscanthus sinensis grass the main focal point 😍
It was just the grass I wanted that could tolerate the heavy clay soil, and my local nursery @annieseggshed had one in stock! 🙌🏼
I’ve divided up the nepeta and geraniums from what I already had in my garden to pop around the edges and I’ve planted some drumstick alliums bulbs.
Still lots to go in such as my hardy annuals that I’ve sown and possibly some more perennials to add some more height towards the middle of the island.
BIG thanks to my OH for letting me have extra space in the lawn for more pretty flowers 😆😘
