Fish don’t exist
All summer I have been swimming in different oceans and I feel a special kinship towards these aquatic angels. I’ve been reading a memoir intertwined with tales of David Starr Jordan, fish taxonomist. There’s a unique liveliness and love that’s been circulating. Fish have been a prevalent symbol. I want to remember how it feels. I want to remember it all.

My heart

Three years in a row now I’ve felt compelled to visualize my heart in springtime. Lately I’m drawn to a more atmospheric sensation, and learning how to use pastels has felt instinctively aligned, it’s the correct medium to accommodate my mission. In this piece, I imagine the pulsations of my heart expanded infinitely across a horizontal axis, in a soothing rhythm. Summoning even the darkest, most obscured parts to emerge and integrate. We all belong, we all coexist, and only together are we whole.

Becoming and undoing are the same: an endless loop of expansion and contraction, addition and subtraction.

To add is exhilarating, but to refine is to subtract. There’s distance between who I am, and who I’m becoming. It seems the only way I can reach her is through a violent shedding.
I know it’s inevitable, yet I fear what emerges on the other side will be a duller, flatter, less interesting being. How can I trust that these loops lead towards greatness? How many cycles would it take to erase me completely?

Being in the moment feels like painful senseless destruction, but I trust the pattern to clear in retrospect.

DO NOT TOUCH

My studio project where we had to create a map in the outline of a memory. I chose to depict my first walk without my parents in Marrakech at age 14. Along with two friends, we set out from our hotel to reach the souk, expecting a straightforward walk. Instead, we were met with relentless harassment: grabbed, yelled at, and followed by men. We never made it to our destination, retreating back in fear. It was both a physical and symbolic journey, that day I shifted from the naive confidence of youth to the self awareness of realizing that my body, depending on the context, can be marked as vulnerable, as something to be preyed upon.

I wanted to capture this feeling of being stripped of power and autonomy. My map woman lays in a vulnerable, almost collapsed pose, her body built from fragments of the Paris map, drawings, and textures that mimic the cracked walls and warm surfaces of Marrakech. She is covered in layers of scrap paper, like fragile skin or clothing, for my audience to symbolically“tear away.” This figure exists at their mercy. Even the very act of tracing her form, a city map imposed on a female body, mirrors the invasion I felt.
