‘A is for 🍎’

sculpture and graphic work
by kallirroi f. roxanne k.r. strider s. and me

this group project examines the apple as a Western “default fruit” and its ingrained presence in language/ metaphor. it serves to stress how eurocentric perspectives normalise certain cultural symbols. By wrapping fruits from other regions in printed apple skins, we visually demonstrate how dominant narratives can overwrite diverse cultural identities. we invite viewers to question what feels natural or universal, revealing how much of our understanding is shaped by history, geography and power

@mariathefartist @roxkrart strider.schulte A is for apple, or is it?
This project explores the cultural and symbolic significance of the apple as a “default fruit”. The apple, beyond being a fruit, frequently functions as a metaphor deeply embedded in western thought. We noticed how many common English idioms rely on it: “apple of my eye”, “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree”, “one bad apple spoils the whole barrel”, etc. It was almost unsettling, the extent of its reach within the structure of language: “pomme de terre” (apple of the Earth), the apple stands in as something completely baseline, entirely different. Naturally, we deduce that for whatever reason, the apple is the most fruit possible.

However, this is not universal. Other cultures assign similar symbolic weight to different fruits, and the reason is shockingly straightforward: different fruits are native to different regions, and history was shaped around that simple principle. For example in China, the peach is treated in a similar manner, appearing across mythology and metaphors, grapes in the mediterranean, and dates in the middle east. So no, A is not just for apple,

Our project involves “disguising” various fruits as apples. A pear, banana, tangerine, kiwi, and lemon, all reduced to the western “default”. By covering these different fruits in printed apple skins, we are erasing layers of deep cultural specificities in favor of a constructed, narrow universality.
We wanted to demonstrate through visual imposition, how dominant global narratives can overpower our unique cultural stories and identities.

We invite viewers to really reconsider what feels natural or universal, how much of their preconceived notions are constructed solely by dominant western narratives. How much of what we really know is shaped by history, geography, and power?
