This song came about from experiences I had working in Sudan around 2010–2011, and from witnessing the enormous contrast between systems built around power and people whose attention was on caring for their communities and building something for those around them.

When I wrote the song, I imagined a man and a woman somehow anthropomorphized as the land and the characteristics of people who care about their communities and for the earth in general, played out in physical moments.

It was interesting to describe some of that meaning through the movements that @andrea.danae.kingston and I explored and the choreography she created for me.

When I started thinking about how to express the meaning of South Sudan, I began exploring movement with my wonderful choreographer friend @andrea.danae.kingston to express the meaning behind the words through the body.

We became interested in forms of physical communication and we looked into ways people communicate across long distances with hand signals, gestures and bodily signs.

Gradually we developed a series of movements that began to feel a bit ritualistic.

At the heart of this song, is how people are constantly giving unseen, sometimes invisible care to each other and the land, quiet acts of service that rarely make headlines, but which hold communities together.

Andrea helped me find a physical language for those ideas and I love that she is also here performing it with me🥰.

Also a big thanks for @isabelle.m.schmitz for her lovely camera work🤗💕

Roxy Rawson’s “South Sudan” comes from an artist with a substantial history in orchestral and alternative folk music. Now based in Berlin, Rawson studied violin and piano at a Paris Conservatoire before gaining recognition in London’s alternative folk scene. Her career has included a Sony development deal, performances at Ronnie Scott’s, Royal Albert Hall, Union Chapel, and the Roundhouse, and support appearances for Sia and Yasmin Levy. Independent on Sunday called her “beautifully peculiar,” Tom Robinson of BBC Radio 6 called her “brilliant,” and PopMatters praised her musical craft. by @roxyrawson

One of the other experiences I had in Sudan was attending a Sufi gathering at Sunset. It was honestly one of the most magical experiences of my life. When we arrived with the people we were with, we stopped with them as they greeted each other. Brothers who practiced very different forms of Islam.

We were ushered towards a larger area where a very large crowd had gathered in a circle and the music and chanting started. There was a dancer with long dread locks I remember.

I remember incense and the energy in the crowd. It was like a kind of buzz that moved the whole crowd and everyone began to kind of sway together and synchronize to a rhythm.

The energy built and built and it elevated more and more gradually, over the course of an hour or two…I’m not sure of the time, because it just felt like time stood still, I was totally inside every moment that happened. The energy rose and rose to an almost ecstatic level as the sun went down.

Roxy Rawson has never been an artist interested in taking the easy route, and “South Sudan” is another reminder that some of the most moving songs are those that choose empathy over spectacle. Drawing inspiration from her time alongside communities in Sudan, the Berlin-based chamber-folk artist delivers a cinematic single that feels less like a performance and more like an act of quiet reflection.

Produced by acclaimed composer Jherek Bischoff, South Sudan unfolds with remarkable patience. Rich live strings create a sweeping backdrop while Rawson’s unmistakable voice floats effortlessly above the arrangement. There is a delicate balance at work here. The song feels intimate enough to whisper directly into your ear, yet expansive enough to soundtrack a wide-open landscape. It’s easy to understand why her vocals are often compared to artists like Agnes Obel, Joanna Newsom, and Florence Welch, but Rawson’s emotional delivery remains distinctly her own.

Rather than telling someone else’s story, South Sudan succeeds because it focuses on what the experience awakened within the songwriter. The track reflects on compassion, humanity, and the bond between people and the land, asking listeners to consider the choices that shape our world every day. It celebrates kindness as an active force rather than a passive emotion, making its message feel both timely and timeless.

On a bus in Sudan, I heard one of the most beautiful pieces of music I’d ever heard. I knew I would feel bereft if I left Sudan without knowing what it was. So in my very broken Arabic, I asked people on the bus if they knew the artist.

Luckily someone did and wrote it down for me. I went to the market the next day and found a Sudanese tape seller. I showed him the name and he took out the cassettes he owned of that artist and let me listen to them all. So kind. And I found the song!! I couldn’t believe it. I went home with that Casette tape.

I found the music fascinating. It had a haunting vocal above what seemed to be an incredibly complex drum pattern. I was brainstorming later to try to make sense of the drum beat with my friend @gregrawson and he explained that the drum part was likely on 1- which allows the subdivision of the beat to constantly change, which it did- I’d never heard anything like it.

The tumbling drum pattern on this track is my attempt at expressing how it felt in my ears to hear that strange drumbeat.

South Sudan...

She is my land
She has sparks in her eyes
And lights up the skies
And with a great bony elbow
She crushes them, those
Who don't hunger and thirst
For the far of the land and the kindness or man

Another snippet from the string orchestra recording with @famesproject. I love @jherekbischoff's writing here, how the strings build and carry the weight of the song and that lovely measured glissando at the end really helps release the tension on a high point.
