Folk - Neoclassical - UK 🇬🇧
Roxy Rawson @roxyrawson with the track ‘South Sudan’.
We love this song, which blends neoclassical and folk music in an original and unique way. We particularly appreciate the singer’s vocal prowess, as well as the beautiful, cinematic and atmospheric arrangements

Folk - Pop - FR 🇫🇷
Lou Mylo @loumylo with the track ‘Won’t Let Me Down’.
We love this pop/folk track, which has real character with a relatively minimalist, raw sound; it’s particularly interesting for its dreamy electric guitar tones and a vocal timbre that’s compelling in its authenticity, control and appeal.

Folk - Pop - AUS 🇦🇺
Louella @louellasmusic with the track ‘BEFORE I GO’.
A lovely pop/folk song, beautifully inspired and masterfully arranged… and what can we say about the absolutely sumptuous vocal performance! We’re completely charmed by this gentle, folky song with its ethereal, dreamy quality.

Folk - FR 🇫🇷
WANOMI @wanomi.music with the track ‘Home’.
We really like this folk track with ’70s influences—it has a relatively retro yet incredibly authentic style. We’re very impressed by the production work, particularly the masterful recreation of the era’s sound—it really feels authentic, especially thanks to the vocal mastery on both the lead vocals and the backing vocals. It’s stunning.

Roxy Rawson’s “South Sudan” comes from an artist with a substantial history in orchestral and alternative folk music. Now based in Berlin, Rawson studied violin and piano at a Paris Conservatoire before gaining recognition in London’s alternative folk scene. Her career has included a Sony development deal, performances at Ronnie Scott’s, Royal Albert Hall, Union Chapel, and the Roundhouse, and support appearances for Sia and Yasmin Levy. Independent on Sunday called her “beautifully peculiar,” Tom Robinson of BBC Radio 6 called her “brilliant,” and PopMatters praised her musical craft.

Roxy Rawson has never been an artist interested in taking the easy route, and “South Sudan” is another reminder that some of the most moving songs are those that choose empathy over spectacle. Drawing inspiration from her time alongside communities in Sudan, the Berlin-based chamber-folk artist delivers a cinematic single that feels less like a performance and more like an act of quiet reflection.

Produced by acclaimed composer Jherek Bischoff, South Sudan unfolds with remarkable patience. Rich live strings create a sweeping backdrop while Rawson’s unmistakable voice floats effortlessly above the arrangement. There is a delicate balance at work here. The song feels intimate enough to whisper directly into your ear, yet expansive enough to soundtrack a wide-open landscape. It’s easy to understand why her vocals are often compared to artists like Agnes Obel, Joanna Newsom, and Florence Welch, but Rawson’s emotional delivery remains distinctly her own.

Rather than telling someone else’s story, South Sudan succeeds because it focuses on what the experience awakened within the songwriter. The track reflects on compassion, humanity, and the bond between people and the land, asking listeners to consider the choices that shape our world every day. It celebrates kindness as an active force rather than a passive emotion, making its message feel both timely and timeless.

PBG 3 Question Interview with Roxy Rawson, “South Sudan" Single

Hi! It’s Produced by a Girl, and I’m thrilled to spotlight Berlin-based chamber-folk artist Roxy Rawson and her stunning new single, “South Sudan.” Produced by the brilliant Jherek Bischoff, this track is rooted in Roxy’s time working with communities in Sudan, and you can feel that lived experience woven into every note. The song opens up a cinematic world, blending lush orchestration with modern folk textures and storytelling that feels both intimate and expansive. Roxy’s soaring vocals and the rich, emotive string arrangements invite us into a space of compassion, resilience, and a deep connection to nature. Her voice carries echoes of Agnes Obel, Joanna Newsom, and Florence Welch, yet she brings her own unique spirit to the mix. Having graced iconic stages like the Royal Albert Hall and the Roundhouse, and supported artists such as Sia and Yasmin Levy, Roxy continues to evolve and inspire after overcoming personal challenges. “South Sudan” is a breathtaking preview of her upcoming album, Bright Star, arriving in 2027.

PBG: I was immediately struck by how “South Sudan” moves from these delicate, dreamlike textures into something bold and full of heart. There’s this sense of intimacy that grows into something almost cinematic. What moments from your time in Sudan lingered with you the most, and how did those memories start to transform into music for you?

Roxy Rawson: I have lots of sensory memories from that time, like seeing the place where the two Nile rivers meet, being part of a Sufi gathering at sunset that felt totally transcendent and witnessing Nuba wrestling. And my favourite moments came every evening, because by then the 40 degree temperature eased up and we would go sit with groups of people drinking tea made by these stunningly beautiful Ethiopian women with diaphanous shawls who would stew tea with multiple amazing spices for hours and hours.

But I think what struck me the most internally, was the depth of care that people had towards each other and their local communities. ....(continued)
