Recap @finnmarkslopet Finnmarksløpet 600

After a very long rest, I left Checkpoint Jergul in the first sunlight with only five dogs. At that point, being last in the field didn’t matter — what mattered was making sure the small dog team was strong enough to continue with the race.

Mandel had worried me earlier. After several veterinary checks and even running alongside her to see if she was limping, she seemed fine when we left the checkpoint. After resting the night Bowie was a bit stiff at the start, but loosened up after the first kilometres. ☀️ 🐕

Further down the river, Mandel began limping again and had to ride in the sled. She pushed through the zipper, because she was so eager to run, but I managed to keep her in the sled. I decided to rest with the dogs right before Karasjok to see and give them a good experience and if they were regenerating, I would give it a try to Levajok.

After two hours rest on the river in the sun and on hay I decided to go ahead. To my big joy Mandel was running smooth, she looked good again and was ready to go — but now Bowie showed clear stiffness and struggled to stretch his hind legs properly.

After discussing the situation together, the decision became clear. I decided that this was it. We scratch.

Sometimes the hardest part of this race is knowing when to stop. The dogs always come first!

Still so incredibly proud of this dog team and grateful for the journey we had on the trail. 🩵

Recap @finnmarkslopet: @roy_ugseth was on the way out of Checkpoint Jergul on Monday morning. The team rested six hours more than the mandatory resting time. With five dogs in the team and a long stretch the day before with Rav as a passenger, the dogs needed more recovery time. Rav and Brahma had to stay. Recap @finnmarkslopet: @roy_ugseth and the dog team came into Checkpoint Jergul on Sunday evening. The biggest 🐕 in the team, Rav, struggled due to heat and bad trail conditions for a big dog like him. Rav had to be transported 50 kilometres in the sled and the 6 dogs pulled extra from Suotnojávri. @roy_ugseth in action at Checkpoint Masi 📍 The stay took longer than expected - Fabel the star leader unfortunately stepped into a snow hole 🐾🕳️ due to bad trail and sight. After massaging, warming, resting and stretching we found out he needs more recovery time for his shoulder so he had to be taken out of the race ❤️‍🩹 Continuing without Fabel was a great loss in the beginning of the race 🐺🌟#huskypower #musher #finnmarksløpet #dogsledding taken in Masi/Maze by @roy_ugseth

@roy_ugseth is on the trail of @finnmarkslopet 600 - Europe’s longest race with 8 dogs.
This means 600 kilometers of teamwork in its purest form - through some of the most raw and beautiful nature on earth. The team consists of Fabel, Brahma, Mandel, Vams, Breda, Lina, Bowie and Rav. The dogs were really excited to go and are looking good!
