Hi! I’m Nellie and I’m joining Spindle Bingo this year. My intention is to have fun, spin a little bit everyday and be in community with other spinners!

Spinning is one of my happy places. I can relax and enjoy the process. I have no production goals, and I’m not going to stress if I don’t hit Bingo or get all the squares. I just want to chill and enjoy some time spinning. What’s your intention this time around?

Currently I’m spinning @mellyknits low micron Jacob, as part of the Delightful advent on a @laime_laine spindle, pictured with 2 lovely spindles from @woodlandwoodworking. Fun fact: the acorn spindle was my first supported spindle and is still one of my favourites

Also! My spindle cops are not esthetic as the kids say, and I don’t work to wind them tight or make them pretty. I find it easier in my hands to wind on as I go, so they tend to be loose and sloppier looking. It’s what works for me right now 😎

Happy Spindle Bingo to all who celebrate 🎉 can’t wait to see what everyone is working on by @royalbeebee

I knit this Finn Christmas stocking as a test knit. It was a fun and quick project. I love how short and sturdy this lil guy is. It’s made stronger by felting and I can imagine it loaded up with goodies later this year!

TDF 2025 ✨

This year’s Tour de Fleece was a lot of fun, as usual with Team Stash Dashers. It’s relaxed, the stash gets spun, and there’s a great community feel to it. So much gratitude to @mellyknits and @battyfibers for organizing us and making the whole event so enjoyable.

I spun exactly 1000g from my stash. I’m laughing at how round a number that ended up being. My only goals were to spin braids that had been lingering or batts that been around for awhile. Don’t worry, I still have plenty more to spin from, but I’m happy to have made a dent in the stash at least.

Oh I also won a Stash Dashers prize! Just another fun and random perk of being a Dasher. I just got it yesterday and opened it up today. I’m so excited. Jenny from Friday Fibres generously sent me 1 lb of raw fleece, 75% BFL 25% Romney. Check out the BFL curl! I can’t wait to scour it.

Thanks to all the Dashers and see you next year! by @royalbeebee

First spin of the Tour De Fleece!

The first wool I ever spun - and the only thing I spun for about a year and a half - was Icelandic. My cousin got a flock and I got to figure out how to process the wool; it’s what I learned to process on, learned to spin on, and even with everything else I’ve worked with over the years it’s still my absolute fav. Not only is this fibre easy and familiar, it was gifted to me by an easy and familiar friend ❤️ Nellie is as light as the fibre she prepped and our friendship is as effortless. I’m so grateful for this little bundle of comfort I got to spin ❤️❤️

The Yarn: 256m / 280y - 60g / 2.12oz of airy fingering weight singles, spun on my Majacraft Suzie with the fast whorl.

The Fibre: Icelandic wool with tussah and sari silk, hand processed by @royalbeebee . Three little batts, each with a slightly different colour gradient happening, spun from lightest to darkest.

The Spin: I put as little twist in this as possible - like just enough so it’s held together, but barely! Less twist than I would usually do for a singles yarn because this fleece was so soft and light and I didn’t want to constrict it any more than what was absolutely necessary. I didn’t full it either, I’m just gonna brave the knit (ha! look at me talking like I knit with my handspun) as I’m mostly sure it won’t come apart in my hands ;) Spun with the longest of long draws. Prep was excellent, 10/10 would spin again (please Nellie give me some more 🙏🏻)

60g out of my 1kg goal! WHOOOOP! #stashdashers #stashdashers25 #dashisland #stashdashersforever #tourdefleece #handspinning #spinningwheel by @royalbeebee

Have you ever rediscovered an old love? Craft-related or otherwise?

This weekend, I rediscovered my love for spindle spinning during a class led by the incredible Diana Twiss at FibresWest. The simple act of flicking and drafting over and over again was calming for me, and enjoyable in a room full of spinners. Kind of a novelty for me, as when I’m spinning I’m usually alone. Also, Diana has a wonderful teaching style. She is so kind and patient, not to mention knowledgeable so if you ever get a chance to take a class with her, I would highly recommend it!

One of the techniques we practiced was spinning from a rolag, to help with controlling a slippery fibre like silk. I have to say, my mind was blown. I’ve spun rolags in a wheel, but never with a support spindle. So when I got home, I immediately made rolags from some new fibre I got, a merino with merino slubs dyed by West Coast Colour and started spinning, and I’m enjoying it so much. Simple pleasures 💛🩵💚

Wheel for sale ✨✨

This beauty of a wheel is an Ashford Joy that I bought new 2 years ago. It was my first wheel and I learned how to spin on it! I’m selling it because I now have two more wheels and no more room in the house to keep this one.

I’m asking $700 CAD and it comes with four bobbins and a soft carrying case. It folds up and is portable. I’ve brought it to spinning classes and friends’ houses and works really well.

I’m in the Lower Mainland BC, and will be at FibresWest this year. Contact me if you have any questions! by @royalbeebee

Spindle Bingo 2025 🌈

☑️ Use your hand spun: finished knitting this cutie-sized hot water bottle, spun from a gradient coloured set of rolags or a batt? I can’t remember exactly, but i think it was some of the first ones I made 🥹

☑️ Prepare fibre for spinning: I dove deep into the stash to make some sock blends. All the batts have the same fibre composition, just different colours.

The blue batts have had 3 passes on a 72TPI manual carder, while the reddish ones have had two. I’ll probably do a third before spinning these last ones.

The sock blend is roughly 70% Suffolk sourced and scoured by @mellyknits, 25% mohair locks, 5% dyed Merino/Camel/Alpaca/Silk, tussah silk and sari silk from my stash.

It’s interesting to see the same blues, pinks and oranges repeated in both old and new fibre blends. I never realized that I was drawn to these colours? Maybe a future challenge for me will be to branch out into new colour ways 🌺🍁🌻🌿❄️☔️

🌿🍄‍🟫🌱 Spindle Bingo 2025 progress…

I’m enjoying spindle spinning again, after some time away, and the medium wool- alpaca blends of the @mellyknits True North guts advent are such a lovely hearty spin. I’ve taken some inspiration from fellow spinners to make cop winding easier on the hands by just winding on a soft cop and declaring it done. This is a huge ergonomic win for me and I think I’ll keep going with this method. Avoiding muscle strain and injury sounds (and feels) good to me!

Drawing more inspiration from spinners @dianatwiss and @whatvivdoes as I knit a hot water bottle cover from hand spun. I love this little project so much. It’s so cozy and satisfying to knit. I spun this ages ago, and I think it’s from rolags I made from dyed Corriedale and sari silk. I really need to knit more of my hand spun!

How’s your Spindle Bingo going? I’m having fun, trying new things and I hope you are too 💖

Today is the first day of #spindlebingo2025 and I’m excited to get back to spindle spinning. It’s been a few months for me with no spinning mojo and this will be a nice way to do a little bit everyday, try some new techniques and dip into the fibre stash too.

Here’s my 15 minutes of spindle spinning today. It’s Day 1 of the True North Guts advent by @mellyknits on a @woodlandwoodworking phang, a very enjoyable combination!

Thank you to @battyfibers @j.ess.reads and @pacificcoasterfibres for organizing this fun spin-along 😘 by @royalbeebee

Started a sweater spin and this has just been a pleasant and slow project that’s now in the plying stage. I’m taking my time with this and not rushing it.

It started with some @mellyknits guts (last slide, top corner) and once it was carded, I had an idea pop into my head. What if I added more fibre and silk? Suddenly a 115g batt became many batts totalling 500g, enough for a sweater. How handy, it’s fall and I’m ready for some sweater knitting .

Details:
Mellyknits Guts:
Corridale from Anna Gratton, NZ
Bombyx silk
Sari silk

My additions:
Corriedale from Ontario, purchased through @stitchandsteelhomestead, hand processed by me
Yak/silk dyed by @westcoastcolour
Dyed silk and sari silk
