Fibre👇🏻
White: Hand processed and combed Corriedale lamb from @pacificcoasterfibres - Ontario wool 🍁
Multi: Hand processed “Sunny” Icelandic wool from @royalbeebee - local wool! 🦫
Red: Rambouillet x roving in the colourway “Mulled” from @knitbrooks - grown and milled in Nova Scotia 🇨🇦

The Spins: I would just like to start this by saying that I am a spoiled rotten brat. I am aware and I am happy to wear this label 🙋🏼‍♀️ I got to take a road trip through three gorgeous provinces with @agoulz my best friend in the whole wide world, tour and shop @customwoolenmills , visit @stashlounge (not pictured but possibly the coolest yarn store I’ve ever been to??), spin with the local guild members, pet a bunch of sheep, watch a shearing competition, meet great shepherds, buy a truck full of wool (those last five things all happening at Grasslands @sksheepdb ), eat good food and spindle spin incredible Canadian wool throughout it all! I know I’m not saying much about the spins themselves but I promise each was just lovely to work with ✨ Special mentions to Melody for her hand combing skills (that prep was a deeeelight!) and to Nellie for making me a precious bundle of my very favourite breed for the ultimate comfort spin ❤️

First spin of the Tour De Fleece!

The first wool I ever spun - and the only thing I spun for about a year and a half - was Icelandic. My cousin got a flock and I got to figure out how to process the wool; it’s what I learned to process on, learned to spin on, and even with everything else I’ve worked with over the years it’s still my absolute fav. Not only is this fibre easy and familiar, it was gifted to me by an easy and familiar friend ❤️ Nellie is as light as the fibre she prepped and our friendship is as effortless. I’m so grateful for this little bundle of comfort I got to spin ❤️❤️

The Yarn: 256m / 280y - 60g / 2.12oz of airy fingering weight singles, spun on my Majacraft Suzie with the fast whorl.

The Fibre: Icelandic wool with tussah and sari silk, hand processed by @royalbeebee . Three little batts, each with a slightly different colour gradient happening, spun from lightest to darkest.

The Spin: I put as little twist in this as possible - like just enough so it’s held together, but barely! Less twist than I would usually do for a singles yarn because this fleece was so soft and light and I didn’t want to constrict it any more than what was absolutely necessary. I didn’t full it either, I’m just gonna brave the knit (ha! look at me talking like I knit with my handspun) as I’m mostly sure it won’t come apart in my hands ;) Spun with the longest of long draws. Prep was excellent, 10/10 would spin again (please Nellie give me some more 🙏🏻)

I am experimenting with colorful batts to counteract this dreary day and my overall feelings of dread about, well, pretty much everything outside the safe cocoon of my family and home. This is @cactushillfarm merino that I processed from raw, eri silk, dyed gold Falkland from @the1764shepherdess, and a little yellow sari silk that @pacificcoasterfibres, @royalbeebee, and I got at Fiber Fusion last year. I was going for daffodils. 🌼

Swipe 👉🏻 to see *some* of the making of Octobers Sommelier Fibre Clubs. I’m honestly surprised I got any pics at all. Pic 5 wasnt even meant as a progress pic, it was sent in a text where I was proving that I was actually working and not reading WEBTOONs in the bath. We really scraped the bottom of the barrel for this post 💁🏼‍♀️

*producers with Instagram accounts are tagged in the photos*

Origins (light brown): Alberta Corriedale blended with 20% llama. We picked up this fleece while at Knit City Calgary and holy dang was it a gem! Blended with the llama this was a wholesome comfort spin, I love these kinds of homey blends.

Blossom (blue): “Sarah” Romney x Corriedale (the last picture is of her ❤️❤️❤️), local Clun Forest x and a full measure of sari silk. It has drape, it has chonk, it has shine, it’s poofy - this blend is doing the whole thing. @walnuthill.farm

Guts 1 (booger green): local CVM, “Dulce” Gulf Coast Native and Bombyx silk. These guts were so pretty just as the guts and blended up it made SUCH a bouncy yarn with a really pretty sheen✨

Guts 3 (light speckly greens etc): local Clun Forest, Suri alpaca and a dash of sari silk. Another homey blend like what we did with Origins but the Clun and Suri made for a more dense batt. It has squish but there is also a weight to it, it’s hefty and smooth and just lovely to hold.

Major thanks to @royalbeebee and @woolnspinning for spinning up the samples - you guys are big time butt savers 🙌🏻

Things that happened on my internet vacation: a photo journal by Melly 💁🏼‍♀️

Pic 1: Skirting with/ learning from/enjoying Lynn @westcoastcolour

Pic 2: Cute Lil Nurse Daughter learned how to use Chromie Homie and she was so good at it! Hooray for child labour 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Pic 3: Celebrated a friendship anniversary with Nellie 🥹😘🫶🏻 @royalbeebee

Pic 4: A new wool room dweller arrived @mazahouse_pottery

Pic 5: Aaron went a little crazy with the paddle again at our local wool auction @wool_n_ewe_afair

Pic 6: Brand new Allen Barry spindle directly on the floor of the ER waiting area. Aaron chopped the end of his thumb almost clean off when he was making dinner. No sitting room, forgot the dish in a rush, so I plopped on the floor and made do while we waited to see a doc. The spindle did really great actually, no harm except all the germs/diseases that got on it. @allenrberry

Pic 7: Video, actually. This is on the way home from the hospital at almost 3am and I’m chewing loudly and talking with my mouth full - it’s almost as gross as the thumb.

Pic 8: 104lbs scoured in July! New record!

Pic 9: Typical coffee shop happenings with Melody 🏆 @pacificcoasterfibres

Pic 10: How I actually spent most of my time 🙌🏻

Tenth spin of the Tour de Fleece and my first true snacky one! I love a snacky spin with all my heart and my friends know this and bless me with many tasty morsels 🤤 This spin is a combo job between batts made by my friends Nellie and Melody - they did not coordinate on their gifts but just LOOK at how perfectly these two came together. I am surrounded by the generosity of these two friends - far beyond just the giving of these snacky gifts - and I love the time I spent with their art just like I love the time I spend with them ❤️

The Yarn: Woolen spun (can’t stop won’t stop) 2ply, 206m/226y - 50g/1.76oz. Finest spin of the tour for me? Dang it just might be.

The Fibre 👇🏻

Batt 1 - 80% Mega Mutt, 15% Shetland and 5% sari silk, hand processed by @royalbeebee.

Batt 2 - “Hattie” the weirdo Jacob from @daughertyranchjacobs with Polworth, llama, @inglenookfibers tussah silk and cashmere from Kashmere, India, hand processed by @pacificcoasterfibres

The Spin: There was no chance of a fatty spin with these fibres, both wanted to be skinny singles, both melted onto the bobbin. Prep was on point 🙌🏻 I was able to spin *unsupported* long draw with both of these very different batts - saying it again, prep was on point 🙌🏻 I love how the Mega Mutt and Hattie the weirdo Jacob show up in this, even with all the other accents and flourishes, I could feel the really good wool in this spin. So grippy, so smooth, I’d like some more please :)
