Once upon a time, just 8 miles west of Cañon City… there was an entire Wild West town. 🤠

Buckskin Joe began as an MGM movie set in 1957, built with authentic 19th-century buildings brought in from around central Colorado. By 1958, it had opened to visitors and eventually became a beloved Western-style theme park.

Visitors could step into the saloon, explore the Mystery House, ride the trolley, catch live entertainment and even meet the town’s donkey mayor. 🫏

Buckskin Joe closed in 2010, and its buildings were eventually moved to a ranch near Gunnison — but for generations of visitors, it remains a memorable piece of Royal Gorge Region history.

One of the best ways to experience the Royal Gorge? Let someone else do the driving. 🚂🏔️

Hop aboard the Royal Gorge Route Railroad in Cañon City and watch the scenery change as the train follows the Arkansas River through the Royal Gorge.

Come for the views, but make a whole experience out of it — grab something to eat, settle in by the window, explore the different train cars, and head to the open-air car when you really want to take it all in.

It’s a Colorado experience that works just as well for a date, weekend getaway, or family adventure.
