The house that Jack built. This grand wooden house was built by Jack Mitchell in 1919. It was first used by workers as a cookhouse while roads were being ploughed and graded. Money ran out for Jack and the house went mostly unfinished. It was then rented by the Gustafson’s from approximately 1942-1946. The house has never been lived in since.

I sat down with Boyd Gustafson who lived here as a boy. Now into his 80’s, he shared his memories growing up as a farm boy in Saskatchewan.

Full walkthrough and stories coming soon the “The Secondary Highway” on YouTube. taken in Saskatchewan by @rscottpics

You can smell the spring thaw in this photo. Shot from the side of the road, I’ve exhausted my online resources on who once lived here. The only thing left to do is door knock. I don’t like doing that as it can be a bit concerning and intrusive nowadays. How do the rural people in here feel about that? I want to know. #abandoned #unsolvedmysteries taken in Alberta by @rscottpics

Don’t miss the curious OWL! (YT - The Secondary Highway)

Built in 1924, Ira Barton was a captain, logger, Free Mason, farmer, rancher, husband and father. He lived in this large two storey wooden house on the Alberta Prairies with his wife Allison, and two sons, Donald and Kenneth.

Ira and Allison retired to BC in 1960. The farm was taken over by Donald and sold sometime in the 1960’s. Today (2025), the house has been collapsing in on itself as the stone foundation falls away from the relentless wind, snow, rain and arid heat of the prairies. It won’t be long until this great wooden icon sinks into the prairie grass.

You can watch the FULL tour on my YT channel “The Secondary Highway”. -Thanks taken in Alberta by @rscottpics
