So I'm trying to create a kind of perceptual flowchart of the Polychromos 140 line. If *I* personally group the colors, where do they land on the page, and what's the visual connection? This is all extremely subjective and very hard to capture well in a photo (some of these look utterly bizarre here haha - Bohemian Green Earth for example looks like Cream, it's actually green grayish), but I think I've arrived at my first group, which is greens and related shades. I also denoted what I perceive to be notable gaps with a question mark symbol. It's a lot of fun, like laying out a perceptual puzzle of sorts, and it'll give me more fun swatches than just "filling in the blank boxes". Any color can be repeated if I feel like it belongs visually in several color categories. Some yellows for instance appear both with greens and yellows and maybe oranges, and so on and so forth, but when it's all said and done it'll give me a much more cohesive overview and you really begin to appreciate the shades and their interaction.

Still working on a portrait, I promise, but taking some time to swatch all 140 Polychromos pencils now that I have them. Really made me appreciate the colors and nuances that much more - also, how good is "cheap" A3 drawing paper sometimes? Underrated. This is just a quick rough pass to get them down, then I'll try to refine them into how I personally want them organized, definitely going to try to have a "skintone" section of sorts, even if I just start with caucasian ones and add to it later. I'm enjoying it overall but the brown and brownish and tan and brown-greenish colors trip me up, because there's about a dozen ways to sort those - a brown section? With the greens? With the yellows? With the reds or oranges? Spread them out across all, but then what goes where? You just ultimately have to trust your own instincts I think, and try variations.

Good thing come to those who wait. From Amazon US, FINALLY, the new Rambo Collection in 4K. Restored in 4K, stacked to the gills with features and bonuses, this truly is the Ultimate Collection and I couldn't pass it up while it was still relatively "cheap". And from England, new Faber-Castell Polychromos pencils, 20 brand new colors, their first in over 25 years, bringing the total collection to 140. Can't wait to try the pastel colors in particular, they're totally ideal for delicate skin and eye details for example. Rough day but this did put a smile on my face.

I've been looking for a decent black pencil recently, you can go to charcoal or pastel, which will be inky black but a little more difficult to work with. But the Caran d'Ache Luminance "Noir Black" is a great choice - expensive, at nearly $5 a pencil 😬 - but smooth and genuinely a very dark, dramatic black. You just have to sharpen it often if you want fine details, which feels like money disappearing in front of my very eyes. 😂 😭

Testing out some more hot pressed watercolor paper (Arches HP, Winsor and Newton HP, Clairefontaine HP and Magnani 1404 Portofino). These are all great, but my favorite right now is Clairefontaine. Buttery smooth, extra white, and then I realized the back of the paper was even SMOOTHER. Just amazing. Arches and Magnani are slightly warmer white, and Magnani feels a HAIR smoother than Arches. Winsor and Newton is extra white but has the heaviest texture by far, almost bordering on cold pressed, lol. For layering something like Arches or Winsor might be a little better, for control and detail, Clairefontaine probably. And don't forget, large sheets can be much cheaper than pads.

You don't exactly have to be Sherlock Holmes to know what portrait I'm working on, but I couldn't help throw out a black and white teaser. The portrait will be in color of course. I'm redrawing a portrait I tried 15 years ago, when I was just beginning to draw bigger and more "seriously". I wanted to learn, and after 15 whole years, I think I'm starting to be happy with my work. My point is this: don't give up on creative hobbies. Stay at it, refine, learn, do research. Eventually it'll all come together: materials, patience, reference, style. And it'll be worth the time and effort. More to come, but this one will take some time. 😅

Been trying to find just the right lighting solution for the bottom of my drawing table and this is exactly what I wanted all this time - from @ledproffsen a 60cm bench LED tube, that comes with a wall plug included. I just attached it with some double sided tape for now, we'll see how that holds, but beyond that it is literal perfection, couldn't be any happier. Buy a tube/bar, DON'T mess around with small strips. Trust me on this.

Got myself a nice new tablet, haven't bought one for almost a decade I think. This was "cheap" ($200) and is said to be a pretty great "bang for your buck" type choice. I'll use this 99.9% for drawing anyway so it doesn't need crazy specs, just a decent screen.

I realize this is extremely simplified and broad and ironically it's my laziest design ever, but here's basically all the research I've done on choosing the right paper for colored pencils boiled into a single post. I really wish I had seen something like this in my own feed like a decade ago, would've saved me SO much time and effort. Oh and I didn't include Pastelmat/Mi-Teintes Velvet, they're kind of their own "thing", but buy those too! (I may revise this post later lol but just wanted to get this out there for now).

Strathmore Bristol Vellum (left) vs. Canson 1557 180gsm (right). These two are incredibly similar to be honest, as suspected. The Bristol Vellum is a fraction more pure white (to be fair this Canson block is legitimately old), and it is considerably thicker/sturdier at 270gsm compared to the Canson's 180gsm. I see why people often refer to Bristol as "Bristol Board", because it's got that stiff, rigid cardboard kind of quality, whereas this Canson "only" feels like quite thick paper. But laying down pencil on these felt identical, genuinely. Even the texture of them was virtually identical. I'm feeling relief of all things - all this time the unicorn was not wholly unique, but perhaps the best of its kind. Going to throw one more candidate in the mix soon, and then I only have one more category of paper to examine. 😅 I'm really geeking out on paper this year but I really want to know what the best are, it feels like I've been wandering the desert for years only to suddenly discover there's been water there all along (i.e. the paper surface MATTERS, and will impact your drawings immensely - duh!).

After many many long years of hearing people praise it to the skies and beyond, I finally have a pad of @strathmoreart Bristol Vellum. This was not that easy to come by in Sweden, there was ONE online store that carried it locally, otherwise I would've had to turn to Amazon or imports. For whatever reason Bristol is everywhere but Bristol VELLUM is a rare unicorn. Will be excited to try it out, and above all compare it to some other candidates, more on that later this weekend. And I'm aware this is the 300 series, but I've heard some say that's what they genuinely prefer, and it's by far the most common version, so I'm fine with this one.
