What does continuous improvement mean for the welfare of meat chickens?

It means recognising that better welfare is not a fixed destination. As animal welfare science advances and farming practices evolve, we must keep asking how the lives of meat chickens can be improved. And how best to use that knowledge to drive meaningful change.

Through regular reviews of the RSPCA Australia Standards, we consider the factors that shape a chicken’s quality of life, including breed, housing, lighting, space, enrichment and opportunities to express natural behaviours. This evidence-led approach helps drive practical improvements on farm, while setting a clear expectation that animal welfare must continue to progress.

To learn more about why continuous improvement matters and how it can help create better lives for meat chickens now and into the future, read on the RSPCA Australia website or check the link in bio. by @rspcaaustralia

What does a better future for meat chicken welfare in Australia look like? At RSPCA Australia, we believe chickens raised for meat deserve better welfare.

That's why we've published our Roadmap for Meat Chicken Welfare, outlining the welfare improvements we believe are needed over time, the progress that has already been made, and the opportunities that exist to do even more in the future.

Improving animal welfare doesn't happen overnight. It takes science, advocacy, collaboration and a commitment to continuous improvement.

What does life look like for the hundreds of millions of chickens raised for meat in Australia each year? In this episode of Great & Small Talk, we explore the welfare challenges meat chickens face, from fast-growing breeds and housing conditions to the changes that can give birds better lives.

Those changes are already taking shape. The new 2026 RSPCA Australia Standard for meat chickens will drive further improvements in areas including space, air quality, lighting, outdoor access, and stunning. And importantly, now includes requirements for slower-growing breeds. It is a meaningful step forward, based on the latest animal welfare science, and designed to create positive change at scale.

Chicken, pig, fish... what's with the three animals?

If you've spotted the RSPCA Certified logo lately, you might have wondered why it features three different animals.

Together, the animals represent those farmed for food. More specifically, the fish represents aquaculture, the pig represents mammals and the bird represents poultry.

We moved from multiple logos, each featuring a single animal, to one unified brand, making it easier for Australians to recognise when a product is RSPCA Certified.

When the logo appears on packaging, the product label will tell you which animal-based protein was raised to the RSPCA's higher farm animal welfare Standards.

But there's something else all products carrying the logo have in common: they come from farms certified against the relevant RSPCA Australia Standard and are covered by the RSPCA Certified Chain of Custody Program meaning the product can be traced back to a specific farm.

One logo. Multiple animals. One clear sign of higher welfare.

Chickens raised for meat are among the most intensively farmed animals in Australia. But how much do we really know about the lives of these birds?

Behind the numbers are individual birds with their own needs, behaviours and experiences. Their welfare can be shaped by almost every part of their short lives, from how they grow and the space they have to move, to the quality of their environment and the way they are handled.

There has been meaningful progress, but there is still more to do.

So, what does good welfare look like for a meat chicken, both today and into the future, and where are the biggest opportunities to improve their lives?

We’re taking a closer look at the science, the challenges and the changes that can make a real difference.

World Homeless Day is Saturday 10 October.

Domestic and family violence (DFV) is the main reason women and children leave their homes in Australia and is the leading cause of homelessness for children. Homelessness, whether long- or short-term, means people may not be able to safely care for their pets.

The RSPCA advocates for people and pets facing crisis - we believe you should not have to choose between your own safety, and the safety of an animal you love. Keeping Australians and their companion animals safe is one of our advocacy priorities because the wellbeing of people and animals is closely connected.

RSPCA programs offer emergency boarding, care, and support, which have helped families and their animals stay safe following short-term crises. But with shelters regularly at capacity and limited funding available, these services cannot meet the (increasing) scale of need.

This World Homeless Day, we are calling on the Australian Government to provide dedicated nationwide funding for more safe emergency accommodation that accepts pets, including pet-inclusive DFV refuges.

Everyone deserves to find safety without leaving a beloved animal behind. For more information, visit www.rspca.org.au/key-issues/keeping-australians-and-their-companion-animals-safe by @rspcaaustralia

How can you be sure a product displaying the RSPCA Certified logo actually comes from a Certified farm?

The farm is only part of the story. Between the farm and the retailer or restaurant, a product can pass through many different hands, and any one of those steps is a point where certified and non-certified product could get mixed up.

That's what the RSPCA Certified Chain of Custody Program is for.

Any business that wants to sell RSPCA Certified labelled products must have a Trademark Licensing Agreement with RSPCA Australia that requires every site in its supply chain that handles certified product to meet the RSPCA Certified Chain of Custody Standard. This includes sites the business runs itself and all those it contracts, right up to the point the product reaches the consumer

Assessments against the Standard are conducted by the RSPCA Australia Certification Body. Assessments check how a product is packaged, stored, identified and kept separate from non-Certified products, so it can be traced back to a Certified source.

The RSPCA Australia Standards ensure animal welfare is a priority on Certified farms, and the Chain of Custody program ensures that the products that you buy can be traced back to those farms.

Because certification doesn’t stop at the farm gate. Traceability matters at every step of the supply chain. by @rspcaaustralia
