I want to know my kids better—not just know whether they brushed their teeth.

I want them to become capable people. Which means occasionally letting them do something I could do in twelve seconds.

And I want to give them a childhood that feels magical without spending it trying to beat last Christmas.

I’m Jessica, a mom of four young kids, figuring this out while regularly telling everyone to lower their voices.

Raise Them Rooted is where I’m sharing better questions to ask our kids, everyday skills we can let them practice, and honest thoughts about the pressure we put on childhood—and ourselves.

Some things to try. Some things to laugh about. Some things worth questioning.

If you’re raising young kids and thinking about this stuff too, I’d love to hear your side.

When are you supposed to know you’re done? Asking because being overwhelmed apparently isn’t the deciding factor. 😂

My kids hear “get in the car” all day. Say it after pajamas are on and suddenly it’s the adventure of a lifetime.

A drive to find spooky houses. Snacks and a movie. A very official announcement from the kids before we press play.

Sometimes a little surprise is the whole magic.

Save this for a night you feel like saying yes to a later bedtime.

The birth order psychology holds true in this house 😆 Everyone’s found their role… we’re just waiting to see where the baby lands.

Does it line up in your house too?

I’ve been thinking about how much we take in every day—and how normal it’s become.

I’m an adult and I still catch myself comparing, worrying, and scrolling longer than I meant to. It makes me wonder what this will feel like for our kids.

If you made it through the whole post, comment “still here.” 😆

I’d love to know: Do you think our relationship with social media is changing?

I still dream about a little more land. But watching my kids run outside to find someone to play with has made me appreciate what we have right here.

Some of my favorite childhood memories started with the neighbor kids. I love watching mine make their own.

Did you grow up with neighborhood kids, or room to roam?

This is what I want to save. Their exact words, at these ages. Little things I think I’ll remember, but know I could easily forget.

Ask your kids what they hope your family never stops doing. Write down what they say—even if they copy their brother. 🤍

I keep saying, “I need to write that down.” Then someone needs a snack and there goes that thought.

So I’m finally starting. The Living Legacy Project is a series of questions and prompts to ask our kids, tell our family stories, and save some of what life looks like right now.

Something fun to do together—and a way to actually keep their answers.

I’ll share the questions, what my kids say, and some of our stories along the way. Join me with your own family.

Save this one to ask later. When you get a minute, ask them and jot down their exact words, their age, and the date. A note in your phone is enough.

Let’s finally write some of it down.

This is what I’ve been trying to find the words for.

I love taking pictures of my kids. But I also want to remember their explanations, their ridiculous comments, and the stories that don’t show up in a photo.

And I want them to know ours, too. Who we were before them. How this family began. Where certain recipes and traditions came from.

I’m calling it our Living Legacy.

I picture it becoming a collection we return to for years. Adding things, remembering things differently, hearing how their answers change as they grow.

I’m figuring out what that looks like as I go. I’ll share some of what we keep, questions worth asking, and simple ways to start your own.

Use whatever interests you. One funny sentence is a perfectly good beginning.

I give my husband a lot of credit for bringing the kids along when going alone would be easier.

They can name fish and ducks I couldn’t tell you apart. They’re learning his favorite things—and slowly making them their own.

It makes me think about what else we could already be enjoying together if we stopped saying “when they’re older.”

What’s something you love that you’ve brought your kids into?

Let’s stop obsessing over the things that don’t matter.

I have four kids. I cannot make every little thing a whole thing. And honestly, I don’t want to.

I’ve caught myself putting more thought into how something will look than whether any of us will actually enjoy it. That’s usually my sign to back off.

I still care. A lot. I’m just getting pickier about what gets my time and energy.

What’s something you’ve stopped bothering with?
