Ruby Colley’s new single, “Hello Halo” is out now! This is the title track of her upcoming record, featuring performances by vocal ensemble exaudi & Colley on violin. This is Colley’s latest work with EXAUDI Ensemble, and was developed alongside her brother, Paul Colley, who is neurodivergent and non-speaking.

“Hello Halo refers to a key word of Paul's (“hello”) that he's used his whole life. Hello Halo, the extraordinary, Ivors Classical Awards-nominated album by Ruby Colley has been released today!

Performed by EXAUDI, whose special affinity is for the radical edges of microtonality and experimental music, this album aims to “challenge the idea of language’s status as the cornerstone of what humanity is."

Hello Halo is a composition that was developed alongside Paul Colley, Ruby’s brother, who is neurodivergent and non-verbal. Despite being termed "non-verbal," Paul uses a rich repertoire of sounds and gestures to communicate. Colley transcribed these communication methods, using live voice and recordings of Paul, to make a vocal map of his life and relationships.

BTS. Hello Halo in development back in October 2024 with @exaudivocal at @brittenpearsarts. It was important Paul got to be involved with the making of this piece as much as possible, so he could have agency and consent through its development. Here he is listening intensely to the movement Cosmology, words taken from my mother’s @kate_c_adams_ artwork titled “cosmology of care”.

Ruby Colley @rubycolleymusic is an Ivor Nominated Composer, Violinist & Sound Artist. She traverses genres & mediums from Classical, to folk, Sound Art & Audio Visual installation. Her instrumentation, far beyond the realm of traditional playing, weaving in environmental sound & electronics. Ruby’s music is eclectic but strangely unique and her performances charged with emotional power and nuance.

Her interests have developed into building a relationship between the audible world and her creative practice. Focusing on overlooked elements of nature & humanity, feeding it into her performance, composition & audio-visual work.

Asked why she chose to be involved in this concert, Ruby says:

“Bearing witness to the horror that has been acted out in Gaza has defied the darkest depths of my imagination. I cannot adequately express how it has changed me & has challenged the core of what I thought it was to be human. Like many of us, I turn to the thing which I know is the best of humanity. Art.

Just under two weeks to go until our deep listening music and astronomy event with ambient artists, @rumenduo 🎻

We are very excited to announce that The Sussex Sidewalk Astronomers will join us to guide us through the night sky and offer the chance to view the planets up close through their telescopes, setting the scene for an immersive concert by Rumen ✨

Music will be followed by a guided star gazing with Sussex Sidewalk Astronomers.

THIS IS RUMEN:
Rooted in cinematic soundscapes, conjuring emotional evocative imagery. @christopher.white_ & @rubycolleymusic come together for the first time to release a unique collaborative project, driven by soprano saxophone, violin and electronics.

As well as conventional playing styles they employ extended techniques, utilising the violin & saxophone in textural and unexpected ways. Their live performances manipulate live strings, synths and multi-tracking recordings. Both driven by composition that defies categorisation, White & Colley traverse genres such as classical, jazz and electronica creating celestial soundscapes that immerse and captivate.

Bring a blanket and cushions to make yourself comfortable and cosy. We will encourage audiences to lie down for this ✨

I’m so happy to bring you this episode with the British Ivor-nominated composer, violinist and sound artist Ruby Colley @rubycolleymusic She grew up with her artist parents and her brother Paul who is neuro-divergent and non-speaking. This conversation shines a light on her beautiful album Hello Halo with the brilliant Exaudi vocal ensemble @exaudivocal @newamrecords She composed this alongside her brother, transcribing Paul’s sounds and using recordings of his voice to make a vocal map of his life & relationships. You’ll be hearing music from this work as well as her project Overheard. Ruby spoke to me about the influence of Breton folk music and J.S. Bach and how she uses field recordings. You’ll also hear about how she has collaborated in some of her audiovisual projects with her mother the artist Kate Adams who founded Project Art Works @projectartworks , a visual arts organization that collaborates with neurodiverse individuals and those with cognitive impairment and high support needs @kate_c_adams_ We talked about navigating music education, stepping away from competitive environments, the joy of improvisation and Ruby’s upcoming project inspired by the beauty of swifts.
