Ruby Colley @rubycolleymusic is an Ivor Nominated Composer, Violinist & Sound Artist. She traverses genres & mediums from Classical, to folk, Sound Art & Audio Visual installation. Her instrumentation, far beyond the realm of traditional playing, weaving in environmental sound & electronics. Ruby’s music is eclectic but strangely unique and her performances charged with emotional power and nuance.

Her interests have developed into building a relationship between the audible world and her creative practice. Focusing on overlooked elements of nature & humanity, feeding it into her performance, composition & audio-visual work.

''Fabulous, Compelling & very new”

— Elizabeth Alker, BBC Radio 3

“it’s rare to encounter something that’s at once deeply personal, richly musical, and socially penetrating”

— Peter Margasak, Bandcamp roundup 2025

Asked why she chose to be involved in this concert, Ruby says:

“Bearing witness to the horror that has been acted out in Gaza has defied the darkest depths of my imagination. I cannot adequately express how it has changed me & has challenged the core of what I thought it was to be human. Like many of us, I turn to the thing which I know is the best of humanity. Art.

Art has been made & shared in the darkest times of our history & can be a beacon of hope & resistance. I want to thank Tara for inviting me to be part of such a wonderful event & I hope my small contribution can be part of that hope in action.”

A very arboreal weekend in Nottingham where I played some incredible bows made from UK woods, played a @rise_athina_b show in a woodworking workshop and improvised in the woods!

Violin bows made by @emmanuel_instruments, from native and reclaimed wood (one used to be part of a church organ!) and are an absolute joy to play with. They were so much lighter than I anticipated but full of tone and perfectly balanced. Loved how simple the construction was too, just a frog that slips into a notch to hold the hair tension. There’s a bunch of ppl and bands I think would appreciate these bows so I’m gonna tag you!

Then a beautiful afternoon of sounds and playing at @wemakeourway, courtesy of @hellothorrecords. I loved playing in this community woodworking space, surrounded by making, with the doors wide open and the sofas outside, audience spilling into the buzz of sneinton market, transformed and transforming.

And then on the way home, a stop off in a woodland full of soft rustling leaves and memories. We hung the giant chimes and played for a Rowan tree in the dappled, shifting light.

Thanks @rdyermusic for being my Athina BB <3

Come and relax and enjoy the panoramic views of the sunset, as ambient duo Rumen wash you in beautiful harmonies and sounds. 💫 🎻
Gaze up to the stars as you allow the sounds and deep listening to transport you to another realm.

Music will be followed by a guided star gazing with Sussex Sidewalk Astronomers.

THIS IS RUMEN:
Rooted in cinematic soundscapes, conjuring emotional evocative imagery. @christopher.white_ & @rubycolleymusic come together for the first time to release a unique collaborative project, driven by soprano saxophone, violin and electronics.

As well as conventional playing styles they employ extended techniques, utilising the violin & saxophone in textural and unexpected ways. Their live performances manipulate live strings, synths and multi-tracking recordings. Both driven by composition that defies categorisation, White & Colley traverse genres such as classical, jazz and electronica creating celestial soundscapes that immerse and captivate.

Bring a blanket and cushions to make yourself comfortable and cosy. We will encourage audiences to lie down for this ✨

Early bird tickets: £17 (including booking fee)

The beautiful short film about "Hello, Halo" featuring Paul Colley is linked in the show notes for this episode with Ruby Colley @rubycolleymusic the Ivor-nominated composer @ivorsacademy violinist and sound artist. In this clip she talks about @projectartworks which her mother the artist Kate Adams @kate_c_adams_ founded. All these episodes are available as videos and podcasts, with full transcript: Linktree @conversations_with_musicians

“Well, both my parents are artists and the studio that you see Paul in as part of a wider organization called Project Art Works, which is the organization that my mother founded. And so the organization was founded on the back of both my parents being artists and both of them giving both me and Paul a platform for some kind of artistic expression and just the general belief that anyone should be able to access not just kind of creativity and making, but I think the act of putting something out into the world is a way of saying that you are here, right, that you exist. And so art became a very kind of clear way for mom to advocate and champion people's personhood and agency through art. And so I guess the philosophy of approach is to essentially allow or bring about the circumstances and environment where people have the opportunity to express themselves on their own terms rather than being kind of herded or managed in any kind of creative ways is ... And because we know Paul very intimately, we know that he loves people and that he loves studying faces. So the photography came about that and his support artist, Georgia in particular, really helped develop his practice through having all of these inclusive means of him to photograph people.” Ruby Colley
