All about juxtaposition with movements and facial expressions, as well as learning musicality.

Werk the Floor

Troupe Formation
Learn a troupe routine with various formations, to help special awareness, timings, and musicality, as well as tips when performing together.

Burlesque 101
For those stepping into burlesque, breaking down techniques in stances, movements, glove peels and tassel twirling.

Business of Burlesque
Learn how to go into burlesque, ask all the questions and learn from a performer, teacher and producer.
We will discuss fees, insurances, etiquette, promoting and castings.

✨ NORTHERN NEWBIES ✨
Now that all of our students have received their photos and soon their videos back, I thought it was time for one final little post to celebrate what we created.

The four of us @hausofrubydwoo @houseofroyaleburlesque @schoolofburly and @theboobytrapburlesque all felt that it would be so lovely to create a showcase where students from different schools could come together, mingle and experience a little bit of what a real show can be like.
But most importantly, we wanted to do it collaboratively and give our students a different opportunity. We see so much competition between schools and producers within our industry, and it was genuinely nice to see everyone just coexist. And it was just, really bloody lovely!

We've all had such an amazing time with creating Northern Newbies, but we also all live in slightly different areas, so we're now going to expand our little idea even further!
✨ Tawny & Roxie will continue with Northern Newbies.
✨ I will be opening Midlands Newbies.
✨ Phoxy will be opening Southern Newbies.

We've already got schools we're looking at collaborating with, and we're really excited to see where this can go.
So, if you're an independent burlesque school in any of these areas and you'd like to be part of a collaborative showcase, please contact any one of us to register your interest.

We're hoping that, in our own small way, we can start fixing a little bit of the burlesque world from the inside. We want to build something that brings people together and helps knit our community in a different way.

And finally to our 16 Northern Newbies performers a huge WELL DONE! You were all absolutely amazing to work with and amazing to watch. I know your instructors think incredibly highly of you, and I hope you're proud of yourselves and the work you've created. Thank you for trusting us, for supporting each other and for being part of our very first Northern Newbies.

10 years of the Haus of Ruby D'Woo. 10 years of Roxi. 💕

Some people join your class, and some people somehow end up becoming part of the furniture, your legal department, your emergency contact, your partner in crime and one of your close friends.

Roxi has been there since my very first ever class, right at the beginning of this crazy little adventure that became Ruby’s Rebels, Haus of Ruby D'Woo and everything in between.

She helped me find a studio in ONE DAY!
She has sent cease and desists 😂
She covers my arse legally, even though we know I'm too on it for anything to ever happen.
She was the very first member of Ruby’s De Luxe.

She has watched this whole thing grow, change, implode, rebuild and somehow keep going, and somewhere along the way, the teacher/student relationship turned into a genuine friendship.

We've had late night horror movie dates, countless conversations, ridiculous adventures and enough burlesque drama to fill several Netflix series!
And then there's the bizarre little universe that seems determined to keep putting us together.
We bought our houses on the same day we moved on the same day, we've swapped locations, and now for easy access in the next few months she's moving again, and we'll literally be sharing the same postcode!

Ten years ago, I had no idea that the girl who walked into my first class would still be standing beside me ten years later.
But here we are.
10 years of Haus of Ruby D'Woo.
10 years of Roxi.
And hopefully a hell of a lot more to come, after quitting every year 😂

Thank you for being there through all of it, not just the pretty, sparkly, stage lit bits, but the stressful, messy, complicated, behind the scenes bits too.
I genuinely couldn't have written this chapter of my life without you in it.

Birthday suit for celebrations 🎉 Last night I celebrated 10 years of being in business with a Cosy Cabaret show, and the amount of love I’ve received from people has genuinely been so lovely 🥹

I’ve been told SO many times that I need to put my face to the things I do. The funny thing is, I’ve always been very happy working quietly in the background, helping people, creating opportunities and shows, supporting performers, schools, workshops and other events, and then watching people I’ve helped take their next steps and sit back and watch with pride.

But last night was different!

I was completely overwhelmed by how many performers came, students I used to teach, people I’ve helped along the way, friends and of course, my wonderful regular Cosy Cabaret audience ☺️ The show was a little trip back in time, with a sprinkle of all the new time good stuff too. The OG performers were incredibly special to me, and there was a reason why each of them was there. All of the performers were absolutely outstanding, and I appreciate every single one of them!! ❤️

If you’ve performed at Cosy Cabaret, Canal Cabaret or Big Bang Cabaret, you’ll know how important it is to me that my performers feel looked after, comfortable and valued, and I couldn’t do that without my incredible team. My De Luxe girls were absolutely ON IT. This is what happens when you choose people who believe in your vision. I think I even sat down for about two minutes 😂 (potentially a control freak 🤏)
I also got to celebrate with @roxi_la_rey who has been by my side for this whole 10 years too 🥰

I could go on and on, but ultimately THANK YOU!

Thank you to everyone who came last night, and everyone who has been part of my journey over the last 10 years, in any way big or small!

I’m only Ruby D’Woo because you’ve all supported me along the way.

I need to find more places to wear this dress! 😍
Friday night I had the absolute pleasure of judging the H2H Troupe Competition, sat alongside a panel of absolute legends! 💕

I’ve been involved in the troupe world for almost 13 years, both on the commercial and industry side, and I’ve seen a LOT.
I genuinely LOVE the creativity that comes from a troupe act, but I also think sometimes we underestimate just how bloody hard it is to create a good one. There are so many more factors to consider when you’re working as a group, and I got asked lots of questions about my thoughts and tips throughout the weekend, so I thought I’d share a few with you all.

✨ Being in sync matters, but so does personality.
Even within a group, I want to see characterisation. Don’t lose the individual personalities just because you’re dancing together.

✨ Tease can be harder in a troupe act, kind of.
Think about interesting reveals, different levels, clever transitions and,creating a WOW moment.

✨ Don’t be afraid to use your voice!
Burlesque is brilliant for breaking the fourth wall, and your voice is another tool in your box.

✨ Don’t just dance at them.
Engagement can feel harder in a troupe, but you have a whole group of performers with eyes on the audience. Pick a spot. Stare at them. Point at them. Get them clapping along. Bring them into your world.

✨ Formations & spatial awareness.
Think about every placement on the stage. There are SO many more options than just moving forwards and backwards! Use your space, create pictures and make those formation changes count.

✨ And primarily, ENJOY YOURSELF!
Smile at them. Have fun. If you’re enjoying yourselves up there, the audience will enjoy themselves with you.

Honestly, I could go on and on and on, but you can pay me for that blaahhahah 😂

Thank you Highway to Hull for having me, judging alongside such incredible people and getting to watch so much creativity was an absolute pleasure. ❤️
