@photoworks_uk Annual 33: Cosmophotographies. Diane Smyth (@dismy) has done an incredible job editing and framing the artists and texts through Yuk Hui's framework of Cosmotechnics, turning it toward photography. Questioning ideologies built around the camera and asking how we can reimagine these in a time of environmental breakdown.

The annual also includes engaging texts, interviews with each artist, and experimental page reordering to critique hierarchies.

A few images from some of the artists here (many more to see):

Delighted to be there with Between Dog and Wolf / Bloodroot and Foxglove, an ongoing project at the Victorian Gardens at Kylemore Abbey that began at @lismorecastlearts, exploring displacement, agency, and identity through plants and cameraless processes. Seeing it alongside these projects is a total thrill.

Huge thanks to all the incredible collaborators in the garden walks/ experiments with the camera, and to @lismorecastlearts @interfaceinagh @kylemoreabbey @artscouncilireland for support of my practice

Thank you for the shots of the publication, @emma.spreadborough ❤

@dismy “Surviving the Anthropocene will demand reflection upon – and transformation of – the practices inherited from the modern in order to overcome modernity itself.” Yuk Hui, The Question Concerning Technology in China: An Essay in Cosmotechnics
.
Yuk Hui argues that technology is never neutral, embodying the values, assumptions and ways of knowing which shaped it – while simultaneously shaping them. Cosmophotographies asks what ideology is embedded in the camera and the images it produces – and whether, in the face of environmental and climate breakdown, we can use it to envisage something else.
.
It’s here! Cosmophotographies, @photoworks_uk Annual 33. Many thanks to everyone who got involved - sorry I can’t show work by everyone 💚

Delighted to be collaborating with the incredible @tanya_chakalova — Ukrainian artist — on Between Dog and Wolf. Her photographs here are from our walks at @kylemoreabbey Victorian Gardens.

"After the first walk, I found myself returning to a rather simple realisation: the land, and everything it gives us, forms a fundamental layer of identity, history and culture. We grow from our landscapes much like the plants that inhabit them. We are nourished by what the land provides, and shaped simply by spending time in the places that become part of us. When we are forced to leave, it feels not as if we've lost only a physical home, but our roots, and something even more essential."

⁂

"Encountering the garden right after Ivana Kupala night, I keep thinking about the Kyiv witches of Ukrainian folklore. They weren't simply figures of superstition, but women whose knowledge was rooted in the land: plants, seasons, weather, healing, and the rhythms of the natural world.

For me the figure of the Kyiv witch feels less like a character and more like a way of imagining a relationship with the land — someone whose knowledge grows from paying close attention, listening to plants, weather, soil, and the subtle shifts between light and darkness."

⁂

"Temporary Protection gives me physical safety, but it doesn't give me certainty. The uncertainty doesn't come only from the war itself. It comes from never knowing what happens next.

What makes it difficult to settle isn't simply that my status is temporary. It's that I don't know what 'temporary' actually means. Every long-term decision - whether to study, build a career, make close friendships, invest in a home, or even plant a tree - is shadowed by the possibility that everything could change without much notice.

How do you allow yourself to belong somewhere when you don't know whether you'll be allowed to remain?"

— Tanya Chakalova

Something grown far from where it belongs, kept alive under glass.

This summer I walked the walled gardens at Kylemore and traced the ghost of 21 hothouses that once held pineapples, melons, vines. Fruit coaxed into a climate that was never theirs.

I've been printing with beetroot and turmeric. Root pigment, root colour, the same red that moves under skin.

Developing work for Between Dog and Wolf, made alongside a small group of artists and poets carrying uprootedness.

Anthotypes fade. That felt right. You can see the effects of the weather. Many fail, but these are some I think are beginning to work.

A glimpse of new collaborative work for the next phase of Between Dog and Wolf — @kylemoreabbey, made with our small, strong group.

Images and a poem by Palestinian poet @_fatenamostafa_: on night walks through the gardens.
=============================

I photograph things
before I have a reason
to miss them.

A flower.
A tree.
A patch of light
resting on the grass.

I used to think
a photograph was for remembering.

Now I know
it is also for the moment
when something
is no longer there.

Loss has taught my eyes
a terrible habit:

to look at what is here
and already
begin to remember it.

---------------------------------------

An honour to work with this talented and profound new voice to develop the next phase of the project.

A taster of our night walking and musings at dusk and dark in the historical gardens of Kylemore Abbey — developing conversations on the subversive aspect of play, and our relationship with plants. Particularly, the hybrid species imported during colonial times in Ireland, and how that history echoes in the hybrid condition of the botanical garden itself. Rootedness and uprootedness.

Working alongside and in conversation with Palestinian poet @_fatenamostafa_ , Palestinian researcher @hibaawaysa, Ukrainian artist and recent graduate @tanya_chakalova, and fellow artists and researchers @miriamdeburca and @roisincoylers, to develop this new phase of Between Dog and Wolf.

Using disposable cameras to open up fluidity and playfulness, 35mm, digital, and cameraless historical processes developed in the Victorian era. Big thanks to @kylemoreabbey, @liz_mc_connell, and @anjagohlke for facilitating our visits!

Happy to share images beginning a new phase of Between Dog and Wolf, now collaborating with Palestinian poet @___fatena, Ukrainian artist
@tanya_chakalova and Irish artists @roisincoylers and @miriamdeburca

We are exploring themes of displacement, conversations about what it means to leave your home country, and the significance of gardens as places of enclosure, power, and memory.

We have been walking the Walled Victorian gardens of Kylemore Abbey in Connemara, looking for plants recognised from home. Among them, Grapes. The fig. The iris. Each one acts as a link.

Thinking about photography's history — its role in bearing witness, in empire, in erasure — and turning to cameraless and plant-based processes to make images with our hands and bodies rather than only through the lens. Looking at the boundary between the cultivated and the wild.

The cameraless workshop was part of Engage Art Studios' weekly summer showcase. 🌹
